On January 1, 2006, the city of Matsuura and the towns of Fukushima and Takashima from Kitamatsuura District merged to form the city of Matsuura.

Presiding Judge Hiroyuki Nakayama acknowledged a correlation between the project and damage to the fishing industry but said the "precise" cause of the damage cannot be established.
Isahaya Bay is part of the Ariake Sea, a nearly landlocked body of water encircled by Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Saga and Fukuoka prefectures.

Ariake Bay is a nutrient enriched productive sea located in western Kyushu and its area is about 1700 square kilometers.
Turbidity during spring tides showed large short-term (6-24hrs) variations due to the tidal resuspension of bottom sediments.  The phytoplankton biomass increased from neap tides to before spring tides, because of the higher nutrient availability in the surface low salinity water caused by the stratification and the higher transparency due to the low turbidity.
To evaluate the effect of environmental change on the Pen shell, we conducted research on the valve movement of the Pen shell which is an indicator of their activity.
