Arianespace, the European rocket-launch competitor of The Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp., broke even in 2003, ending three years of losses after obtaining rockets more cheaply from European Aeronautic, Defense & Space Co., its biggest supplier-shareholder, the company said yesterday.
Lower costs for the rockets that Arianespace uses to send telecommunications, scientific and military satellites into space allowed the company to counter last year's two-thirds drop in the number of launches, Chief Executive Jean-Yves Le Gall said at a Paris news conference.

Throughout the 1990s, and into the early 21st century, Arianespace consistently sold more than 50 percent of the rockets used to launch commercial satellites—primarily communications satellites (often called “comsats”)—into orbit.
Arianespace had picked the launch site because rockets could be launched to the east over ocean without danger of falling on any islands and because it was close to the equator.
Ariane-5 was continued, however, because Arianespace officials expected communications satellites to continue to get larger and realized that Ariane-4 was not big enough to continue launching two satellites at a time.
