The ariary replaced the previous currency, the Malagasy franc (also known as by its French name, the franc malgache) (ISO 4217: MGF), on January 1, 2005.
Coins and banknotes had been denominated in both the official francs and the semi-official ariary and iraimbilanja since the franc malgache was introduced.
On banknotes issued since July 31, 2003, the ariary denomination is displayed prominantly, and the franc denomination in small print.

 Madagascar launches new currency, the ariary
The new currency's smallest paper denomination of 500 ariaries is worth about 19 euro cents (21 US), and 100 of the old currency.
The Madagascan franc itself replaced the CFA franc in 1973, a currency shared by former French colonies which is still in use primarily in west Africa.
The ariary, which means "five units", is worth five iraimbilanja, meaning "one unit".

 Muddling to Madagascar
To make life confusing there is another unit called the ariary.
Many bills are denoted in both units (500 ariaries and 2500 FMG); make sure you are not confused by the two numbers.
Things are almost always priced in FMGs (in some of the more expensive places, hotels, etc. things are priced in French Francs and US dollars and you are expected to pay with hard currency).
