Wakayama Prefecture is one of the best-known mikan producing districts in Japan, and Arida City produces the best quality mikan, known as Arida mikan.
The warm climate of Arida and protection offered by the Kishu Clan, which administered the Kansai region in feudal days, successfully produced a huge amount of Arida mikan, many of which were shipped to the capital of Edo (presently Tokyo), which was a large consumption center, and praised as the best mikan in the country.
Arida mikan itself is the condensation of Japanese history.

Business confidence in six prefectures in the Kansai region (Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Shiga, Nara and Wakayama) continued to improve in December, according to the quarterly 'tankan' report released by the Osaka branch of the Bank of Japan (BOJ).
The Arida Agricultural Extension Center of the Wakayama Prefectural Government has developed a new species of Arida mikan, a famous Satsuma mandarin produced in the prefecture.
Introducing a new cultivation technology called 'multi-drip,' the center succeeded in growing a new type of Arida mikan, with the brand name of 'Kinokuni Arida Maru-dori (multi-drip) Mikan,' which is less affected by weather conditions and has a better balance of sugar and acid.

With cholera being endemic in the country, there was an outbreak in Arida City, Wakayama Prefecture in 1977, of which the source of infection was ascribed to a returnee from the Philippines.
Another outbreak occurred in 1978, presumably due to consumption of lobsters of Indonesian origin served at a wedding parlor at Ikenohata, Tokyo.
