 LIVING WAGE UPDATE
In the Harvard controversy, students ended a three-week sit-in at an administration building on May 8 when management agreed to set up a panel to see to paying menial laborers there a "living-wage." In Cambridge, Mass., that amount was calculated at $10.25 an hour.
Tel Aviv University Professor Ariel Rubinstein of the economics department preceded Harvard in spearheading the cause of assuring decent pay for menial workers on campus.
He oversaw the launching of talks with administrators over the issue in 1998, leading the university to appoint an ombudsman to oversee the matter.

As if teaching ideologies, especially socialism, which the professor favors, were synonymous with “critical thinking,” and as if in his college there would be any room for a dissenting view.
Nor does he mention that low economic growth causes hundreds of thousands of families to be unable to make ends meet since their salaries are so low and monopolistic pricing adds a premium of between 30% to 50% above world prices.
But then Rubenstein, a recipient of the Israel Prize in Economics, is never concerned by any gap between his pet peeves and theories and obdurate reality.

Univers, weekblad van de UvT - The intellectual horizon of Rubenstein, Klingemann and Annan
Just as is the case with the news media, 'the intellectual' is often attributed the role of 'watchdog of democracy'.
The question to which extent this intellectual interference currently is desirable in the Netherlands but also in the rest of world, was addressed by university paper Univers to two of the honorary doctors of today: the Israeli economist Ariel Rubenstein and the German political scientist Hans-Dieter Klingemann.
The cases with which we confronted both of them to concretise this general theme, involve the intellectual debate as it has been unfolding in The Netherlands concerning four international issues: the Second Intifada in Israel, the enlargement of the European Union, the Srebrenica massacre, and the anti-globalization movement.

Its Knesset faction includes a few stray politicians from Labor who rode in on the centrist wave of Israeli popular opinion, but it's mostly culled from the right-wing Likud bloc.
When Ariel Sharon -- Kadima's founder -- was in power, the party didn't have a written platform; after Sharon's stroke forced him from the scene, a platform was written, but if you were to ask any Kadima supporters what it is or what it means, it's unlikely that any two could agree.
But it hardly matters now: in the aftermath of the war with Hezbollah and with nearly universal agreement in Israel that the government completely mismanaged both the war and the home front, the prime minister finds his entire governing agenda in tatters.

Chapter 9 'A Game Theoretic Approach to the Pragmatics of Debate' by Jacob Glazer and Ariel Rubenstein describes what one would guess from the title.
Specifically, Glazer and Rubenstein set out to explain what strategies are used by listeners to judge the winner of a debate.
The authors first show that the form of the argument makes a difference; second, they show that no method is foolproof.

A tournament certificate is a subdigraph of a labeled tournament T that in conjunction with unlabeled information I about T allows errorless reconstruction of T. The paper examines isomorphism certificates, where I is an unlabeled copy of T, and score certificates, where I is T's score sequence.
The work was motivated by Ariel Rubenstein's conjecture for isomorphism certificates that, with a few noted exceptions, every such certificate for an n-vertex tournament has at least n-1 edges.
We resolve this only for n < 7, but prove elsewhere that the similar conjecture for score certificates is true.

Yet, even though Nash's disease was in remission at that time, when Ariel Rubenstein proposed him for membership in 1989, the other four committee members opposed even his nomination.
The committee chair, Truman Bewley, baldly declared, "I doubt [Nash] would be elected, since he is well known to have been crazy for years," and dismissed the idea of a nomination as "frivolous".
Though Nash was elected by an overwhelming majority of Fellows when Rubenstein forced his nomination in 1990, by-passing the committee and making a joint nomination with two other mathematicians, much the same scenario was played out when Nash was nominated for a Nobel Prize.
