On Oct. 17, 2001, four hours before Zeevi was to give his resignation speech to the Knesset, explaining who Peres was and why he couldn't sit in the same government as him, he was shot dead outside his hotel room in Jerusalem.
Zeevi's killing by gunmen in a Jerusalem hotel in 2001 was about as close as the Palestinians have managed to get to emulating an Israeli-style targeted assassination - with the difference that, in the Palestinian operation, no bystanders were killed.
That neatly ignores the point that Zeevi's death was retribution for Israel's earlier assassination of a widely respected Palestinian politician, Abu Ali Mustafa, the leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Zeevi, who also carried Israel´s flag into the opening ceremony last Friday, said fatigue contributed to his second-round loss to the Korean Sung Ho-Jang, which took him out of running for the gold.

 DAWN - Editorial; October 20, 2001
RAGED into action by the assassination of the ultra-nationalist tourism minister, Reehavam Zeevi, Ariel Sharon’s tanks have rolled back into the West Bank once again, viciously threatening to open a blood-drenched “new era” between Israel and the Palestinians.
For his part, Zeevi’s views on the Middle East crisis did little to endear him to the Israeli moderates, let alone the Palestinians.
It appears that in the assassination of Zeevi, Ariel Sharon has now found an excuse to ruthlessly attack Palestinian civilians and indiscriminately kill as many people as he possibly can so as to present it as a fait accompli before the US even tries to restrain him.
