  FanFaire: Ariodante
Ariodante, one of Handel's lesser known operas, is considered to be one of his most inspired works - and the cast that San Diego Opera put together proved that it is. Indeed what guaranteed its success was the excellent casting, comprised of the new generation's foremost interpreters of Baroque music.
In the opera, mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux (in one of her growing list of "trouser" roles) is Ariodante, betrothed to his beloved Ginevra (soprano Rosemay Joshua).
He almost succeeds and the plot thickens: Ariodante attempts to end his life and Ginevra, falsely accused of infidelity, is desperately driven to madness.

Ariodante (HWV 33) is an opera seria in three acts by Handel.
The opera was first performed in the Covent Garden Theatre, London, on 8 January 1735.
Ariodante opened Handel's first season at Covent Garden and successfully competed against the rival Opera of the Nobility, supported by the Prince of Wales.

Handel's 'Ariodante' at English National Opera, enjoyed by Robert Hugill
Ariodante is the first opera which Handel wrote after he lost the services of his star castrato, Senesino, to the rival Opera of the Nobility.
The tessitura of this role, the last Handel wrote for Senesino, seemed a little low for Coote and it was with relief that I heard her as Ariodante.
After this moment, Ariodante disappears from the opera until Act 3, an interesting example of Handel and his librettist subsuming the requirements of opera seria to the necessities of the plot; this is one of those rare things, an opera seria which is almost entirely plot driven.

Set in the ancient kingdom of Scotland, 'Ariodante' is the story of rival dukes competing for the hand of the young Scottish princess Ginevra, and the rule of the land.
Ariodante, a foreign prince in search of adventure, has fallen in love with Ginevra, and she with him.
I found that the music in 'Ariodante' was at times quite repetitive, although further musical interest is provided by the fact that musical repeats in the arias have ornamentation added by the singers, both as musical arrangement and as improvisation.

Raymond Leppard was one of the first major conductors to develop an interest in baroque opera, although a British reviewer of this reissue recently lamented that Leppard ‘stuck his head in the sand and stopped learning’ at about the time this recording was made.
Ariodante has arguably been better served by recordings than any other of Handel’s major operas, but we cannot avoid the fact that Leppard’s sounds dated in comparison to Nicholas McGegan’s (Harmonia Mundi) or Marc Minkowski’s (DG).
Janet Baker’s Ariodante is still exemplary, and other recordings featuring Lorraine Hunt and Anne Sofie von Otter (both superb) have not eclipsed her magnificent performance.

For example, when it gets to the point at which A is disguised as B is disguised as C seducing D (whose gullibility is the greatest mystery of all), Hogwood says that "usually the music tells you exactly what is happening then, and you often don't need the supertitles.

In Ariodante there are four duets--extremely generous by Handelian standards, two in the first act (which together account for under three minutes of music), and two longer duets in the third act (lasting about ten minutes).
One writer defined Baroque operas as "complex mosaics with the arias as articulate cameos." In Ariodante, Handel was such a skillful composer that he not only provided incredibly detailed, beautifully rendered cameos, but he actually brought those cameos to life, and in the process gave us a peek into our own hearts.

Though some purists may quibble about cuts in the score and certain features of the staging, anyone who knows anything at all about music and singing will be thrilled by the level of excellence achieved by San Diego Opera's first venture into Handelian territory.
The latter is free of any supernatural elements (although in some productions the cruelly maligned heroine, Ginevra, experiences a feverish visitation of Bad and Good Dreams), but the loss of magic is more than compensated for by a taut plot infused by a psychological realism remarkable in the Handelian canon.
Mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux is utter perfection as the work's eponymous hero who is driven to despair by the apparent infidelity of his betrothed.

In 2007 Emmanuel Music will present a festival of three Handel operas, Orlando, Ariodante and Alcina, all of which are based on Orlando Furioso, the epic poem by the great Italian Renaissance poet, Ludovico Ariosto.
Exactly two hundred years after Ariosto's poem captivated all of Europe in 1532, Handel used episodes from the novel and composed Orlando (1733), Ariodante (1735) and Alcina (1735), three of his greatest operas.
When we hear these three stories of love's delusions, madness, and magic together, we understand Handel's vision in a way that is hidden from us when we see them as isolated individual operas, the "what they're about" has not been captured.
