Arion (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arion is a fictional character from DC Comics' universe.
Arion began as a secondary feature of the DC Comics book Warlord in issue #55 (March 1982).
Arion recently reappeared (presumably via magical time travel) in Infinite Crisis as one of the mystics gathered in Atlantis to keep the Spectre at bay, and later in the Day of Vengeance tie-in special as one of many magical beings summoned to help rebuild the shattered Rock of Eternity.

And the editors of the Superman comics decreed that in an effort to reduce the number of Kryptonians in the universe (who were becoming more and more commonplace as having "miraculously" survived the explosion of their home planet) that Kal-El was to be the definitive only survivor.
Arion's brother, the evil wizard Garn Daanuth threatened to possess Kara's body and use her as a tool for his own ends.
Before passing onto the afterlife, Arion told Karen that he was not her grandfather and that what he had done for her was a favor for her mother.

Arion claimed that her parents had died after Kara was born and that he'd performed experiments on her to engineer her super powers.
Though Arion had given her a history to believe in, Power Girl continued to live with a sense of uncertainty about her past.
This baby manifested within Kara upon her own proper maturity and was born during the "Zero Hour." (Zero Hour #0) Kara and the child (she was strangely compelled not to name him) were protected from harm by magic, and the baby began to grow at an abnormal rate.

The Unofficial Arion, Lord of Atlantis Biography
51,000 years ago, Arion was one of the first of Atlantis' sorcerers to use his powers for peace rather than for war, but he also played a part in the sinking of the Atlantean continent.
For centuries, Arion was the undisputed Lord of Atlantis and protected it from evils such as Garn Daanuth and the Lords of Chaos.
For years, it was believed that Arion was the grandfather of Power Girl, but a recent confession has stated that it was a lie.

Using a trick, Arion wrests Kara from Garn and then throws a crystal that once housed the soul of their father, Caculha (the most powerful of the Seven Gods) at Garn.
PERHAPS Arion was trying to strengthen the weakening magic-sensitivity of his line and saw Kara as the likeliest person.

Her background was retconned so that she became the descendant of the Atlantean sorcerer Arion, frozen in suspended animation for millennia until the present day.
Arion himself had admitted to having deceived her for her protection, at her mother's request.
Still to be explored is the effect of Kal-L's revelations and the returned memories to Power Girl, the cause and outcome of her fluctuating powers, and the reason why physical contact and close proximity to Supergirl causes Power Girl to lose control of her abilities (as seen in the new Supergirl issue #1).

When Kara was threatened with bodily possession by Arion's evil brother, Garn Daanuth, Arion sent her through time to the late 20th Century, aging from infancy to her teens en route.
Arion's grandson and Kara's brother, Khater, had been reincarnated over the ages and, in the 20th Century, served with the Justice Society as Hawkman (suggested in SECRET ORIGINS # 11 and confirmed in # 16's letter column).
Kara was deeply protective of the child but was appalled when she learned that it had all been a ploy conceived by Arion and other sorcerers to create a champion to destroy the demonic Scarabus.

Arion is about the only one left whose name has any cache, and credit Busiek with some ingenuity for realizing that he would still be available for his use, if only in the past.
Third, Arion provides a very nice visual in which Busiek and Pacheco segue the story to modern times.
Arion leaves his companions, still in a state of exhausted bliss--or extreme abuse depending on which idiot you ask--and literally cuts a way to the twenty-first century.

Legend records that he was saved from drowning by a dolphin, which was charmed by his song.
But then there were some sceptical Greeks and Romans, who, standing out from the orthodox pagans of their times, equally doubted the story of Hercules and the whale, and Arion and the dolphin; and yet their doubting those traditions did not make those traditions one whit the less facts, for all that.
But, as you have shown your skill at other-times, so now also wheel the great fl-maned horse Arion about every way, and help me as you may be able.

In response to a question about the value of perseverance, Nimoy recounted that in 1956 he was a cabdriver, and he picked up then-U.S. Sen. John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts.

I started looking at Arion because nobody was using him much, and he'd had his own book for a while, he had some history, some gravitas, some sense of being important to the DC Universe — and I really liked the bitter, cranky old bastard he'd become in Arion the Immortal.
Besides, the way Carlos draws Arion, he looks so cool that I wouldn't be surprised if he gets his own series again.
