Arista Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arista Records is an American record label that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony BMG, and operates under the RCA Records Group
This revelation caused a firestorm in the music industry, as recording artists (particularly slickly produced pop acts) were now under siege and subsequently forced to cut back on lip-synching to show that they were authentic.
In response to the scandal, Arista's position was that the company had been completely unaware of Rob and Fabrice having not themselves recorded their album.

But despite the label selling millions of records, sources indicted Arista has suffered operating loses for the past two years, which is among the reasons for Reid’s exit.
What ensued was a highly publicized power struggle that ended with Reid at Arista and Davis securing his own label, J Records, in a joint-venture deal with BMG reportedly worth $150 million.
Industry insiders speculate that the changes at Arista are part of BMG’s downsizing preparations in anticipation of regulatory approval for the Sony-BMG merger, though one BMG executive insisted that the changes at Arista were unrelated.

Arista is known as a company that spends a lot of time on an artist's career development, something that a lot of other labels talk about doing but don't necessarily do.
But I was watching it at the point where the record was already made, and they had been through the production scenario, and somebody had already worked with them maybe one, two, even three years.
I thought the Garbage record was the coolest record of the year, but I didn't believe that it would be a multi-platinum record because only the coasts would get it, but the middle of the country would not.

Recording artists, and the record labels that make or break them, are brands built on a cult of personality.
Prior to J Records, Davis became a figure for the history books as founder of Arista Records and by nurturing many of the music industry’s top-selling artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Santana, Patti Smith, and Sarah McLachlan.
Davis’ continued success is a testament to his ability to surf the fickle waters of the music biz, building solid success stories based on talent and future potential in an environment where trends come and go like the tides.

Stereophile: Arista Records Faces Tough Sledding in Davis's Absence
Arista had been one of the most successful labels in a desperate and volatile business, with top talent like Carlos Santana and Whitney Houston on its roster.
Despite his track record and obvious youthful energy, Davis's age—he was nearing 70—caused certain executives at BMG's parent company, Bertelsmann AG, to pressure him into retirement.
Arista, formerly one of BMG's best-performing units, has had few hits in the wake of the changes, and Reid, like all BMG executives, is under heavy pressure to generate profits.
