Kyushu's smallest prefecture, Saga is located on the northwest corner of the island, bordered by the Genkai Sea and the Tsushima Strait to the north and the Ariake Sea to the south.
A number of towns and villages in Saga have merged with larger neighboring cities, as part of the ongoing nation-wide process of mergers and dissolution of municipalities.
On October 1, 2005, the towns of Morodomi, Yamato and Fuji (all from Saga District) and the village of Mitsuse from Kanzaki District merged into the city of Saga.

 Japanese Porcelain Marks
Porcelain was produced in Arita for the first time in 1616 under the control by the feudal lord of Nabeshima, or the present Saga Prefecture.
Arita ware is also called Imari ware because the products of the Arita kiln were mainly shipped from a nearby port of Imari.
Arita porcelains of the early days were typically made in the Chinese style of the period, with deep-blue patterns on a white background, called sometsuke = "blue-and-white".

From Arita Sarayama in the 17th century, these finished porcelain wares were brought to the port of Imari just to the north of Arita Sarayama, and from there they were shipped out to the many ports of Japan by the Kitamaebune ships.
It was during this period, in the 1640's that new techniques were introduced that allowed porcelain makers to decorate with more colors including red, green, yellow and purple.
Now the original Arita Sarayama area is called Arita Machi, and is in the Saga Prefecture.

When the helicopter passed over four temporary tent-stalls at a low altitude, nine pieces of pottery — including plates and pots — were blown off shelves in the tents.The nine pieces were worth about 20,000 yen.

This and more is described in Robert Yellin’s article in the Japan Times on the Korean ceramists in Kyushu and an exhibition of their work now underway at the Japan Folk Crafts Museum (Nihon Mingeikan) until the first week of June.
I live in Arita and can see exhibits like this all the time, so I can promise you it would definitely be worth the trip to the museum if you’re in Tokyo during the exhibit’s run.
