First recorded gospel pianist got her start in Austin
Dranes had been living in Dallas (not Fort Worth, as has been written) in the State-Thomas neighborhood when she was discovered by a traveling Okeh talent scout in early 1926.
Dranes became Okeh's biggest gospel star almost overnight, but she wasn't always paid in a timely manner, according to correspondence between Dranes and record execs made available in 1970 to writer Malcolm Shaw.
Dranes was staying in Sherman, where her family (mother Cora Jones and siblings Milton, Millie, Rome and Bill) lived, when she was beckoned to record in Chicago for the last time in June 1928.

Arizona Juanita Dranes left Texas for Chicago in June 1926 accompanied by a note that read as if it had been pinned to her sweater.
According to the death certificate, Dranes was born April 4, 1894, to Cora Jones and a father listed as "Unknown Dranes." Bios universally have Arizona born in 1905 or 1906 and marvel that she was barely 20 when she made those groundbreaking recordings.
Dranes' recording career was over by 1929, when the Depression dried up demand for down-home Southern gospel and she confined her playing to Church of God in Christ services.

Based in Texas, Dranes was a keyboard player and choral-song leader for several C.O.G.I.C. preachers, culminating with her work alongside Bishop Samuel M. Crouch, Jr.
Arizona was spotted by an OKeh Records talent scout at a church in Dallas, and she would go on to make more than 30 highly influential recordings for the company.
Everything about a Dranes performance was surprising for church music of that day: rhythms borrowed from ragtime and barrelhouse tunes, melodies embellished by octave and single-note runs.

A descendant of Booker T. Washington on his mother's side, he attended college in Oklahoma and trained to be a teacher, but the Spirit called him and he became an evangelist and faith healer.
Arizona Dranes (a blind female pianist and vocalist) helped him to build a large congregation in the Oklahoma City Church of God in Christ, from which he successfully evangelized throughout the lower Midwest during the early 1920s.
In the company of Dranes and the Church of God in Christ Jubilee Singers, McGee made the first of his sanctified sermon records for Okeh in June of 1927, thus launching a recording career that would last for almost three years.

The renowned COGIC musical pioneer Arizona Dranes was clearly an influential figure, with impressions of her pounding ragtime piano and vocal style clearly spilling over into some of Ballinger’s early recorded works.
Ballinger’s style is a combination of infectious, rowdy piano and compelling tenor vocals.
