However, the "arklinux" user (the one you're using after installation, unless you create other user accounts) is set up to automatically launch graphical config tools as root.
The default username is 'arklinux' and the password is disabled, meaning you can log in only through autologin before you set a password (for details on setting a password, see item 5).
The arklinux user has special capabilities (provided by the kapabilities tool) that allow it to perform certain (configurable) tasks normally only available to the root user (such as installing packages and stopping/starting network interfaces).
The fact that the system boots up to a user Arklinux with essentially root powers and no passwords scares the crap out of me. I guess I can look around and see if it is possible to lock the system down in a reasonable way.
XMMS is obsolete, doesn't support any recent codecs, hasn't made any new releases for years, uses loads of libraries that no current system should have (gtk 1.x, for example), and really doesn't do anything amarok, juk or noatun can't do better.
Arklinux is the most responsive KDE system I've ever used.
Wanted to run Arklinux but after spending three days trying to get that to work, am now trying Mandrake 9.2.
With Arklinux it would boot in just fine but lock when I started X. With Mandrake 9.2 I must interactive boot and not start the APM daemon or it locks at that point.
I have loaded different distros of Linux on many makes of MB's none of which were nvidia and have never had this type of problem.
Actually, I wonder if this ArkLinux critical alert is related to this.
The ArkLinux makers say that there is no default password for the root login, but I can't get past the "Password: " prompt just by pressing enter when prompted.
So if ArkLinux is running the root console simply as su, then that version of root may not have all the capabilities of real root.
Posted - 03/19/2005 : 5:01:06 PM Okay I have installed ArkLinux and I have been messing about with it for awhile.
Posted - 03/19/2005 : 7:56:56 PM this might sound retarted from me but i coudnt get it from your post, are you using the root account, some personal software can be uninstalled when not using the root account, ive come across this mistake myself way to often.
I have the ArkLinux Extra Software disc and so I put that extra software on a while ago and now I want some of it gone.
ArkLinux burst onto the Linux scene in January 2003 with a plan to reach the "average computer user." What sets ArkLinux apart from other distros?
DesktopLinux.com talks with Bernhard Rosenkraenzer, aka 'Bero', co-founder of ArkLinux about the company's plan to deliver a full-featured operating system based primarily upon a Red Hat Linux 7.3 / 8.0 foundation and KDE that is both easy to use and offers applications for performing everyday tasks.
This in-depth talk reveals Bero's studied observations about what is preventing Linux from widespread use today and will help Linux reach the 'masses' tomorrow.
The default installation allows the arklinux user to run all graphical admin tools (including konsole, but not konsole with autorun arguments -- so malicious software cannot simply launch
Use the kapabilities tool to remove all privileges from the arklinux user
Create a new user and use that user -- the default setup allows only the arklinux user to run the graphical admin tools as root.
The developers can be reached by IRC on #arklinux or arklinux-devel on irc.freenode.net or on the mailing lists provided on www.arklinux.org.
Since we have only started growing recently, we have previously had no need for "organisation", but this will start to develop as we move towards alpha 9, as we have many changes planned and many more contributors.
A good place to start is #arklinux on irc.arklinux.org and the arklinux-list at arklinux dot org mailing list.
I started wondering what it would take to convert my Libranet box over to ArkLinux alpha 9-1.
After considering all the options, a hard drive was hooked up to another machine, installed Libranet 2.8.1 and used scp to copy the /home/username over to the new drive.
Why should I choose ArkLinux(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
When using Linux I use Suse (now Novell, hence corparatized), and I would like to know what advantages there are to using a startup like ArkLinux instead.
I was interested in something that is VERY easy to use so that I can set it up on other people's computers.
I'm not sure if ArkLinux is it yet, but I'm interested.
In this directory, you'll find: 2006.1 Current tested version of Ark Linux.
Anything that has been in dockyard-devel for a while gets moved here when some developers found it works.
