There are slight ruins of an ancient castle of the Ormondes, demolished in 1649 by Cromwell.
On the 9th of June 1798 the Irish insurgents, attacking the town, were defeated by the royal troops near Arklow Bridge, and their leader, Father Michael Murphy, was killed.

Founded by the Vikings, and the location of one of the bloodiest battles of the 1798 rebellion, it is now a thriving commuter town with a population of 11,721 according to the provisional 2006 census statistics.
The town is situated on the N11 route from Rosslare to Dublin, as well as having rail connections along the same route – there are commuter services in and out of the capital.

The Battle of Arklow took place during the Irish Rebellion of 1798 on June 9th when a rebel force from Wexford, estimated at 10,000 strong, launched an assault into County Wicklow, on the British-held town of Arklow, in an attempt to spread the rebellion into Wicklow and to threaten the capital of Dublin.
When the rebels finally moved against Arklow, the town had been reoccupied by a force of 1,700 men sent from Dublin under General Needham, who quickly fortified the town with barricades and had artillery positioned on all the approaches to the town.
The rebel army that formed for attack on the afternoon of the 9th June was a combined force of Wexford and Wicklow rebels led by Billy Byrne, Anthony Perry, Edward Fitzgerald and Fr.
