Topic: Arleen Auger

Arleen Auger (Soprano) - Short Biography
Arleen Augér left the Vienna State Opera in 1974, and with her move to Frankfurt in the same year Augér turned more to lyric roles in opera and to the development of her career as a concert singer.
Arleen Augér continued to expand her recital repertoire and made selective appearances in roles she felt were suitable for her rich tone; she sang Schubert and Schumann lieder and turn-of-the-century French art songs besides commissioning new song cycles by Libby Larsen and Judith Zaimont.
Arleen Augér was renowned as a great concert and oratorio soprano, especially esteemed as a Bach interpreter, taking the lion's share of the soprano parts in Helmuth Rilling's Bach cantata cycle (mid 1970's to mid 1980's).

Helmuth Rilling - Arleen Auger sings Bach
The late Arleen Augér was born in 1939 in California, and her career led her through a wide variety of music and composers until her untimely death in 1993.
An excellent singer of lieder, such as that of Schubert and Schumann, a fine opera singer, especially of Mozart, she was a consummate Bach singer, and stands as one of the greatest soloists in Helmut Rilling’s complete recordings of Bach’s cantatas for Haenssler.
Auger’s coloratura is gentle and subtle, and her humility makes her ideal for Bach’s spiritual soprano arias.

Arleen Auger in Recital - Emerson Randolph
Miss Auger is one of those singers who could sing in any language and make an audience feel included, whether they know the language or not.
Miss Auger's program covered a century of Romantic song, beginning with a set by the youthful Franz Schubert and ending with Gustav Mahler at his best in the five pieces she had chosen.
Although Miss Auger, who had yet to find her stride, sang conservatively, she invested each selection with sincerity, as well as with the acute sense of style that was to characterize her work throughout two entire hours of singing.

Though critics may have feasted on the tonal qualities of the voice and its beauty of sound and production, Auger’s was also a dramatic voice and that is noticeable here to a high degree, especially when the cantatas give her the opportunity for some florid extensions and soaring declamation.
That kind of attention to detail is apparent in the orchestral version of Arianna a Naxos where it’s clear that the vocal and string colours have been subtly matched and that the one sheds light on the other.
The play of string shading on Auger’s soprano is consistently imaginative and revealing as is the tension and bite Hogwood evokes from his forces.

Disillusioned love is the subject of ‘Son pietoso’ where the orchestra is at its most gentle, Auger at her most tender.
