The Arleigh Burke class destroyer, designated DDG98, is named in honor of Navy Adm. Forrest Percival Sherman who served as chief of Naval Operations from 1949 until his death in July 1951 and was the youngest man ever to serve in this role.
The Sherman is the 48th ship in the Arleigh Burke class of Aegis guided missile destroyers and the 23rd Aegis destroyer to be launched and christened of 28 contracted to Northrop Grumman Ship Systems.
It is the second destroyer to carry Sherman’s name.
