 Francis, Arlene
Arlene Francis played a key role in television's first decades as performer, talk show host, and guest star, appearing on many shows and proving herself to be one of the medium's most durable personalities.
Ultimately, Arlene Francis' career as a national talk show host was a casualty of forces that were moving network television away from strong women hosts, serious topics, sustaining shows and public service, and toward immediate bottom line profits--the same forces that drove Edward R. Murrow from the air at CBS.
From 1954 to 1957, Arlene Francis was, along with Arthur Godfrey, Murrow, Dave Garroway, and Jack Paar, one of the founders of television talk.

As a very young child when Miss Arlene Francis was beginning her exit and retirement from the public's eye, I missed the opportunity to be exposed to her many theatrical and TV performances.
In fact, I was not really exposed to Miss Francis until I happened to tune into "What's My Line?" reruns in the past year.
After watching several shows, I decided I wanted to know more about a lovely woman who clearly established herself at the foundation of American television.

To quote from the 1950s film, On the Waterfront, Arlene Francis "coulda been a contender." She was certainly one of the foremost talk show hosts on television in the 1950s and if her show had continued into the 1960s, her national status as a talk show host might have been assured.

From the designer gowns to her tasteful journeys to the panelists' table to the craftsmanship with which she played the game, Miss Francis brought class to a genre of programming which was all too frequently dismissed as mindless and immaterial.
I have vague memories of Arlene as early as the age of three when my mother would tune in her Home show on WDAK-TV in Columbus, Ga. My interest was piqued when one morning she was interrupted by the exploits of Clarabell the Clown from Howdy Doody parading across the stage on a scooter.
Dorothy Kilgallen, as executive producer Gil Fates once wrote, "was the woman viewers loved to see fall on her face," in part because of her sometimes acerbic newspaper commentary and partly because her gamesmanship was almost too intense for weekly consumption.
