The film crew was also allowed to shoot sequences at the top of a real launch pad with an actual space shuttle docked to it.
It is what it is. Many people have tried to compare it to Apollo 13, but that's like comparing apples and oranges.
Apollo 13 is based on a true historical event (Docu-drama), while Armageddon is an Action/Adventure/Sci-Fi movie.

  Filmtracks: Armageddon (Trevor Rabin)
Armageddon: (Trevor Rabin and Harry Gregson-Williams) If there ever was a score that single-handedly defined the simultaneous arrival of (and backlash against) the concept of a "Media Ventures" score, it would be Armageddon.
But that didn't stop the poorly conceived and written film from earning far too much money, for the late 1990's were time when CGI effects had made it both possible and popular to show the worst disasters of biblical proportions on screen.
The typical Zimmer-ized keyboarded action for the major effects scenes in the film are filled with samples familiar to those who collect Zimmer's work; it's all terribly derivative, and the method of providing a heightened sense of excitement through the short, staccato blasting of the keyboards isn't going to win any awards.

Despite the film’s considerable running length of over 150 minutes, you will be hard pressed to find a single moment that does not glue the viewer’s eyes on the screen.
While the film’s story might be simple and the script might exhibit some gaps and flaws, the way in which it is converted into images is stunningly good.
Part of the fun is that the film keeps the viewer nearly as much on his toes as the actual characters on screen.

 DVD Review: Armageddon Criterion Collection
Bay seems to be trying to hide the idiocy in this film by cutting from scene to scene at a pace that suggests he's auditioning to be the poster boy for Attention Deficit Disorder.
Granted, Armageddon does get a few minor details right, but calling attention to them is sort of like praising an airplane crash because a couple of the seats weren't destroyed.
While I don't think this film is appropriate for anyone simply on the grounds of taste, I have to admit that the fast pace and quick editing is almost perfectly suited for the short attention span of teenagers.

Armageddon seems to be a title that can't escape controversy in many realms.
Unfortunately, the expectations for Armageddon were rather high due to the presence of a second DVD devoted solely to supplements and because of the relatively high list price of $49.95.

Sometimes critics choke on even the best of these for their shallowness in comparison with more meaty films, but it's hard to deny that a good action movie can attain a level of spectacle and excitement works of other genres can't.
Armageddon is the culmination of everything bad about high-action special effects flicks.
I sincerely hope the blockbusters to come employ some substance to generate the frenetic levels of energy and tension that action and special effects are so often mistakenly thought to be capable of by themselves.

Owen Gleiberman is a film critic for EW In "Armageddon," this month’s insolently bombastic will-an-asteroid collide-with-Earth thriller, American military honchos scramble to find someone to save our precious planet, and the best they can come up with is a driller.
You never quite know where you are within a given setting, but then, at Armageddon, a bogus rah-rah spectacle, all that’s supposed to matter is that you’re in the moment.
In "Armageddon," the world never feels truly at risk, but the movie has an apocalyptic thrust all the same.

Trouble is, he doesn’t bother to change the pace or form of the film and, although his material is treated with the precision and care of a capable director, an on going sense of repetitiveness found so regularly in Armageddon becomes tiresome and monotonous.

The film opens with the depiction of the last great meteor to hit the earth, the hypothesized cause of the demise of the dinosaurs some 60 million years ago.
As calm and patient is the film's opening shot, the rest of the film is a fast-paced, in-your-face montage of action and destruction.
The film's early sequence of a space shuttle being riddled with meteors and eventually exploding in a fiery blaze is largely uneventful, with the exception of the nice, distinctive camera shake added to some shots of tiny meteors slicing through the shuttle.

Armageddon: Criterion Collection (US - DVD R1) in Reviews > Video Discs at DVDActive
Armageddon, directed by Michael Bay and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, takes us to a near-future scenario in which a deadly asteroid on a collision course with our planet gives humanity a bare handful of days in which to either avert the catastrophe or prepare for death.
Naturally, the film’s storyline follows those who take on the challenge of saving the world: Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) and his misfit team of deep-core drillers, who must cooperate with NASA in order to pull off the most difficult space mission ever.
If you’re looking to add Armageddon to your collection, you should consider whether the Criterion’s special features are worth paying almost twice the price of the regular edition, which has the same non-anamorphic transfer and 5.1 sound.

Aquarian Concepts Community Film Reviews: Armageddon   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Armageddon was a thrill-packed movie with very good special effects which may help awaken people to the reality of earth changes.
While the film has many flaws, mainly the unrealistic technical scenarios, the dynamics of the various personalities in the story—those in NASA, those in the military (under orders of the president of the United States), the astronauts, those of the drilling team—make for an interesting study of third-dimensional leadership and the need for fourth-dimensional leadership.
In the movie, because there was no true leader, in almost all scenarios those with varying degrees of leadership did not know when to relinquish their position and submit to another with higher insights, resulting in much chaos.

Armageddon Movie Review by Anthony Leong
By focusing on one major story thread, that is, the mission to deflect the course of the asteroid, "Armageddon" is able to avoid the narrative and emotional dilution that plagued its predecessor.
In "Armageddon", the focus is primarily on telling the stories of Stamper, A.J., Truman, and Grace-- their challenges are set-up, their struggle is presented, and the pay-off comes in a satisfying emotional high.
"Armageddon" also came off as a more humorous and evenly-paced pic, in contrast to the "Deep Impact", which was not only overtly-grim, but was also stuck in first-gear for the majority of the first two acts with a story that lacked a sense of urgency.

"Armageddon" reminds me of the kid in the back of everyone's high school class who was scared out of his wits when the finals were handed back.
Much like this year's other asteroid film "Deep Impact", an asteroid is headed this way, and we've got to send a team of people to send a bomb into the asteroid's core.

Visions Sci-Fi - Armageddon Review   (Site not responding. Last check: )
In a film industry where everyone tends to think that special effects are key to a film's success, "Armageddon" blends spectacle with bloodshed, action with child-like glee in such a way, you can't help but be compelled.
The film wastes no time sucking us into its world, and from the opening scene concerning a space shuttle being torn apart by a meteor shower in space, to a shiver-inducing rock storm in New York City, to a smile-inducing shoot-out on a deap sea oil rig, it'll have you deeply enthralled.
Michael Bay expertly balances all the elements of this film in a superb manner, making sure to take the appropriate time to introduce the main characters, their relationships with each other, and their past history, then shifting gears to focus more on the fantastic plot of a rogue comet about to make contact with Earth.

Armageddon offers much more than just action as we witness the eternal theme of a father who disapproves of his young daughter’s fiancé mostly because he is too much like the father.
In the end, this is a deeply moving love story between a father and a daughter, between a father-in-law and a son-in-law, and between generations which blesses the continuation of life and shows in emotional terms why life is worth saving.

Journal of Religion & Film: Armageddon at the Millenial Dawn by Conrad Ostwalt
Movies such as Deep Impact and Armageddon promised to explore the idea of the end of existence by drawing on a culture's rich tradition of symbolic imagery associated with Jewish and Christian apocalyptic upheaval, but they were generally perceived to lack depth and originality.
However, in these films, the divine as "other" is replaced by aliens, disease, meteors, and machines as "other"--an otherness that exists in binary opposition to humankind.
