The first campaign of the AFEM was the Cuban Missile Crisis and the award was issued for military service between October 1962 and June 1963.
Following this original issuance, the AFEM was made retroactive to 1958 and issued for actions in Lebanon, Taiwan, the Congo, Quemoy and Matsu, and for duty in Berlin between 1961 and 1963.
The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal is the second oldest campaign medal of the United States which is still issued for current operations, the oldest being the National Defense Service Medal.

The Humanitarian Service Medal is a military decoration of the United States armed forces which was created in 1977 by order of President Gerald Ford.
The medal is awarded to any member of the United States military (including Reserve and National Guard members) who distinguish themselves by meritorious participation in specified military acts or operations of a humanitarian nature.
The medal may also not be presented if the either the Armed Forces Service Medal or Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal was presented for the same period service.

It is the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and today the Pentagon announced that it will be awarded to service members who took part in or provided direct support to operations Joint Endeavor or Joint Guard in the Balkans.
The expeditionary medal is authorized to service members who participated in or provided direct support to Joint Endeavor or Joint Guard while deployed in Bosnia-Herzegovina or Croatia, aboard U.S. naval vessels operating in the Adriatic Sea, or as a regularly assigned aircrew member flying to, from or over the two countries or the Adriatic.
Past Armed Forces Service Medal recipients who don't meet criteria for the expeditionary medal retain their awards and are unaffected by the new exception.
