Prior to 1995, the initial award of the Armed Forces Reserve Medal was presented without a device with the second and subsequent awards denoted by hourglass emblems.
The Armed Forces Reserve Medal is a service wide decoration for all branches of the military and is presented to both officers and enlisted personnel.
The Armed Forces Reserve Medal is considered a successor decoration to the Naval Reserve Medal and the Marine Corps Reserve Ribbon.

There is hereby established the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, with accompanying appurtenances and devices, for award to members and former members of the reserve components of the armed forces of the United States as hereinafter provided.
The Armed Forces Reserve Medal shall be awarded in lieu of the Naval Reserve and the Marine Corps Reserve Medals for service performed after twenty years from the dates on which such medals were established.
Subject to the provisions of this order, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal shall be awarded under such regulations as the Secretaries of the military departments of the Department of Defense and the Secretary of the Treasury shall severally prescribe.

 Awards
The Air Medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity in or with the armed forces of the United States, shall have distinguished himself by meritorious achievement awhile participation in aerial flight.
Award of the Air Medal is primarily intended to recognize those personnel who are on current crewmember or non-crew member flying status, which requires them to participate in aerial flight on a regular and frequent basis in the performance of their primary duties.
The Meritorious Service Medal is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States or to any member of the Armed Forces of a friendly foreign nation who, while serving in a non-combat area after 16 January 1969, has distinguished himself or herself by outstanding meritorious achievement or service.

Following a tour as a test pilot instructor, he reported in 1984 to the USS Coral Sea, on Caribbean and Mediterranean deployments.
In 1986 Readdy transferred into the Naval Reserve to join NASA and served as an instructor pilot and unit commander until his naval retirement in August 2000.
Readdy is currently Associate Administrator, NASA HQ Office of Space Flight that has oversight for the Marshall, Kennedy, Stennis and Johnson Space Centers as well as programmatic oversight for International Space Station, Space Shuttle, Space Communications and Space Launch Vehicles.
