Words With Wings - Part II
The first recorded human attempt to fly by means of gliding occurred in 852 A.D. According to the Islamic Times (Nov. 1998), that year a Moor named Armen Firman, living in Cordoba, Spain, made a large cloak resembling wings and jumped from a tower.
He made no further attempts, and the lesson Firman learned about the aerodynamic shortcomings of garments was lost in time.
In 875, a chemist and inventor named Abbas Ibn Firmas, who also lived and studied in Cordoba and who had no doubt heard of Armen Firman’s attempt to fly 23 years earlier, built a glider that carried him “for some distance,” according to the Islamic Times.

First powered heavier-than air flight, December 17, 1903
There are records of early short-distance flights from the 9th to 11th centuries, such as the parachute flight of Armen Firman, the glider flight of Abbas Ibn Firnas, and possibly earlier human-carrying kites from China.
The modern age of aviation began with the first untethered human lighter-than-air flight on November 21, 1783, in a hot air balloon designed by the Montgolfier brothers, and balloon flight became increasingly common over longer and longer distances throughout the 19th century, continuing to the present.
