Between 1936 and 1952, the flag was red with the gold hammer and sickle in the top left hand corner.

The constitution of the Azerbaijan SSR was approved by the 9th Extraordinary All-Azeri Congress of Soviets on March 14, 1937.
The Azerbaijan SSR was established in April 1920 after the invasion by Russian Soviet forces and the surrender of the government of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic to local communists under the leadership of Mirza Davud and Nariman Narimanov.
In June the forces of Azerbaijan SSR together with the Russian Red Army and limited Turkish assistance staged a combined assault on Armenian-held territory in western Azerbaijan and successfully recovered all territories which Azerbaiajan previously lost to Armenia during the Azeri-Armenian war of 1918-1919.

The Armenian Church is frequently considered by the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches to be monophysite, along with the Coptic, Abyssinian, Syriac, and Indian churches, which as a group are often called the Lesser Orthodox Churches.
The Armenian priests, as typical in the Eastern Church, are divided into the monastic and parish clergy, with all the hierarchs coming from the former group.

 Struggle for Seccession from the Az.SSR
The authorities of Azerbaijan SSR systematically and persistently violated the rights and interests of the Armenian population of the Nagorno Karabagh Autonomous Oblast during the entire time it was under Azeri rule.
Trying to avoid the plight of once Armenian Nakhichevan, the Armenian population of which dropped from 60% (at the time of creation of Nakhichevan Autnomous Republic) to 1.5% according to the census of 1953 and later disappeared, Nagorno Karabagh Armenians saw secession as the only guarantee for their secure future.
On February 20, 1988 the session of the Nagorno Karabagh Oblsast Soviet of People’s Deputies resolved to appeal to the Supreme Soviets of Azerbaijan and Armenian SSRs to transfer NKAO from Azerbaijan to Armenia.

On February 20, 1988 the Armenian representatives at the session of the Regional Soviet of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region adopted a decision "On requesting the Supreme Soviets of the Azerbaijan SSR and the Armenian SSR to transfer the NKAR from the Azerbaijan SSR to the Armenian SSR".
These decisions of the NKAR and the Armenian SSR contradicted the USSR constitution, in accordance with which the borders of a Union Republic could not be altered without its consent and the borders between the Union Republics could be changed only with their mutual agreement with the eventual confirmation of the Union authorities.
In order to erase from the history the fact of residence of Azerbaijanis in the Armenian SSR, in accordance to the decision taken by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR on April 9, 1991 the names of 94 Azerbaijani settlements were changed.

Mass pogroms of Armenians on February 27-29, 1988 in the Azerbaijani town of Sumgait became the culminating point and continued the official policy of Azerbaijan to impede the possibility of a fair solution to the Karabakh problem.
However, that status was discontinued on November 28 of the same year due to the joint pressures of the Azerbaijani SSR and the pro-Azerbaijan forces in Kremlin, and NK was returned to Azerbaijan.
Since their previous actions had not been stopped or penalized by the central soviet government, the pogroms of Armenians living in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijani SSR, followed in January 1991, which was a continuation of the campaign of ethnic cleansing.
