Last year Senator Hill announced the new class of patrol boats were to be named the Armidale class to coincide with 60th commemoration events of the sinking of the original HMAS Armidale.
Armidale was sunk by enemy action on 1 December 1942 during operations to reinforce guerrilla forces operating in Timor and evacuate Dutch troops and Portuguese civilians.
Pirie (I) (1942-46) was a Bathurst Class corvette.

HMAS Armidale, the first of twelve Armidale-class patrol boats officially entered Royal Australian Navy service in June.
Armidale was named on 21 January 2005 and delivered in April.
According to the Royal Australian Navy, Armidale's missions will consist primarily of "surveillance, interception, investigation, apprehension, and the escort to port of vessels suspected of illegal fisheries, quarantine, customs, or immigration offences." The patrol craft will likely play an important role in homeland and port security, not to mention local anti-terrorism operations.

The two new patrol boats are the second and third state-of-the art Armidale Class Patrol Boats built in Australia for the Navy by Austal Ships in Perth, Western Australia, as part of a $553 million contract between the Federal Government and the Defence Maritime Services.
The Armidale Class Patrol Boats are able to operate for longer at sea with a range of some 3,000 nautical miles more than the Fremantle Class.
