Type 23 frigate HMS Northumberland (F238) sailed from Devonport in May 2001 on the first leg of an arduous seven-month deployment, first heading for the Middle East and a stint on Armilla Patrol, where she helped enforce UN sanctions against Iraq.
This patrol involves regular MIOPS (maritime interdiction operations), under which merchant ships suspected of breaking sanctions by illegally smuggling oil from Iraq are boarded and searched by Royal Navy parties who go aboard from seaboats or by rapid roping on to the deck from a helicopter.
Northumberland was relieved from her Gulf patrols by sister ship HMS Kent in September 2001, at which point she set course for Australia and the Far East.

The massive size of the ship left us looking over her for hidden weapon systems since she carried less than a fast patrol boat.
The prevalent comment of the time was "What the hell is inside there?" What we found was beautifully lined passageways that would have been the credit of a cruise liner, but a nightmare for damage control, acres of glowing tiles and woodwork, all of which would have to be polished daily.

The following year Richmond was dispatched to the South Atlantic as part of Atlantic Patrol Task (South) and later underwent a major overhaul which concluded in 2000 and Richmond duly rejoined the Fleet.
In 2002 she arrived in the Caribbean where she performed numerous tasks including the obligatory "fly-the-flag" duties to the Commonwealth countries in the region as-well as undergoing trials.
In 2003 she, under the command of Commander Wayne Keble, deployed to the Persian Gulf on Armilla Patrol where Richmond relieved HMS Cardiff in that region.

A plan to reform the unit with Sea Kings was abandoned in favour of 826 Squadron and it was almost 15 years before 815 Squadron re-commissioned at RNAS Yeovilton in Jan 1981 with the Lynx HAS.2, taking on the role as the headquarters and support Squadron for small ships' Lynx Flights from 702 Squadron.
It moved to Portland in Jul 1982 and during the 1980s was involved in the South Atlantic, the Armilla Patrol and relief operations off Lebanon, Aden and the Carribean.
As the Wasp was being phased out service, some of the unit's Lynxes were transferred to 829 Squadron, to share the load in Sep 1986 and again in Apr 1988.

The real danger in such a scenario is creating the appearance of a defense task without having either the political need or the defense means to back it up.
The RN allready has a great advantage in sea command training since the off-shore patrol role (which is handled by our Coast Guaard) gives young officers (and senior rates) a very good early experience of command upon which they can build in larger warships.
It is a lot cheaper to play gesture politics with a patrol vessel than a battleship.

Post Falklands five more were equipped to provide the basis for the Armilla Patrol, the hazardous patrol duty in the Gulf during the Iran-Iraq war where air and missile attacks were a constant threat.
Given the RN's high exposure to Exocet pre Falklands it would be folly to suggest the threat was not known, but the equipment, in particular the long promised and much delayed Seawolf, simply was not available, and High Command's contempt for the gun was by then a byword on the lower decks, and not shared!
Israel were keenly aware of a build up of Soviet built missile equipped patrol boats and feared a blockade, she bought the German built Jaguar fast attack boats and developed the Gabriel Missile to arm them with.

Since taking over from HMS Cardiff, HMS Richmond has been kept busy adapting to her new role as the Armilla Patrol warship in the present, uncertain times.
Since leaving Bahrain, HMS Richmond has been at sea in the Northern Arabian Gulf or “NAG.” Whilst in the “NAG” HMS Richmond has begun maritime interdiction operations or MIOPS having embarked her Royal Marine unit from HMS Cardiff.

In 1966 the squadron disbanded and 15 years passed before 815 was reformed at RNAS Yeovilton in 1981 with the Lynx HAS Mk 2, as the Headquarters for embarked Lynx Flights.

Between August 1990 and February 1991 several flights were involved in offensive operations in the northern Persian Gulf, and since then Lynx flights have continued to be employed on patrols around the world.
