  Armley Gaol - Leeds
Ninety three men and one woman were to suffer the death penalty at Armley between 1864 and 1961.
Peace was a violent career criminal who had murdered two people, one of them a police constable and was serving life in prison for armed robbery and the attempted murder of another policeman who was trying to arrest him.
An inquest was held after it by the City Coroner (Mr W. Clarke) and the jury certified that death was due to dislocation of the vertebrae caused by hanging, duly and properly carried out.

Armley is a former hamlet approximately halfway between Tisdale and Nipawin in Canada, just west of Highway 35 and north of Highway 335.
Coming into existence in the early 1900s as the farming region was settled, Armley reached its peak during the 1920s with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1924.
With the decline in the rural population of Saskatchewan and the consolidation of businesses and services in larger centers, the townsite now only contains a local community hall and a handfull of houses.

He commented that he was surprised that little emphasis had been placed on the failure of HMP Armley to make sure that the communal cell recommendation made by the medical officer had been carried out and that the Coroner had not drawn attention to the evidence that Mr D had been bullied.
In addition, prisoners arriving at HMP Armley are now examined by full-time prison doctors who are better placed to prescribe appropriate facilities within the prison and to follow through their recommendations.

Benjamin Gott was instrumental in putting Armley on the industrial map.

The J W Roberts factory in Armley spewed out deadly asbestos dust for decades before closing in 1958 with the dust affected not only hundreds of workers, but also their families and people who lived around the site.
Hundreds of victims contracted asbestos-linked lung cancer mesothelioma, creating what came to be known as the Armley asbestos tragedy after the Yorkshire Evening Post exposed the scandal in the late 1980s.
