		Ninety three men and one woman were to suffer the death penalty at Armley between 1864 and 1961.
		Peace was a violent career criminal who had murdered two people, one of them a police constable and was serving life in prison for armed robbery and the attempted murder of another policeman who was trying to arrest him.
		An inquest was held after it by the City Coroner (Mr W. Clarke) and the jury certified that death was due to dislocation of the vertebrae caused by hanging, duly and properly carried out.

		Over the last forty years these have improved out of all recognition, but the incongruity is underlined by the disappearance of the wealthy mill-owning section of the community, leaving a cathedralesque monument standing high above a typical decaying inner-city area.
		Benjamin Gott was instrumental in putting Armley on the industrial map.
		The family lived in Armley, and there are commemorative plaques to some of them within the Church, and a living memorial in the form of the Church's busy Social Club, just across the road.
