The closer the soldier is to the fragmentation grenade when it explodes, the higher the damage quotient (due to the increased chance of being hit by shrapnel).

Reactive armor designs are based on the assumption that dispersing the shaped charge jet, so that it impacts on a large are of the structure behind the reactive armor, will reduce the jet's penetration into it.
This armor is useful for lightly armored vehicles and in situations where a minimal amount of explosives and protection against both shaped charges and normal kinetic armor piercing projectiles is important.
Armor suits for specific vehicles are designed so that the explosive holding modules can be removed and attached easily, thus leaving the vehicle with some kinetic protection even when the explosive package is not installed.

Armor for light vehicles is expected to prevent penetration of bullets of any type, even when impacting at a speed in the range of 700 to 1000 meters per second.
For heavy armored vehicles pellets having a diameter of 38 mm and a height of between 32 and 45 mm were found to be more than adequate to deal with 20, 25 and even 30 mm armor piercing projectiles when used in a multi-layered armor panel according to the present invention.

Armor-piercing shot and shell - Definition, explanation
An Armour piercing shell is a type of ammunition designed to penetrate armour.
On the introduction of ironclad warships in the late 19th century it was found that the ordinary cast-iron projectile readily pierced the thin plating, and in order to protect the vital parts of the vessel wrought iron armour of considerable thickness was placed on the sides.
Armour-piercing shells of this period had a bursting charge of about 3% of the weight of the complete projectile, and were often fitted with a soft steel cap for the perforation of hard steel armour.

Science Fair Projects - Armor piercing bullet
Armor piercing ammunition, as the name suggests, is used to penetrate body armor and light vehicle armor, and even heavy tank armor and reinforced concrete, depending on the size of the weapon.
Armor piercing bullets are usually equipped with a sharp point and are filled with a heavy core (hardened steel or tungsten carbide) to improve armor penetration abilities.
High-caliber weapons, such as those built onto combat aircraft, may employ rounds containing an even heavier depleted uranium penetrator, which spalls on impact, producing incendiary effects and furthering the damage.

Note: a full body armor suit that has an area mass of 6 pounds per square foot will weigh in the neighborhood of 55 kg (120 pounds) while the 3.5 pound per square foot requirement leads to a suit weight of about 32 kg (70 pounds).

During all the (very well-deserved) outcry over the lack of armored vehicles in Iraq during the early days of the initial post-invasion occupation, we heard a lot of complaints that the non-uparmored Humvees were suffering because they were never designed to carry the weight of extra armor.
As some of you may know, body armor is a subject about which I have spent a considerable amount of coverage over the years (no pun intended, I swear).
So, not surprisingly, Darpa is rolling out a second competition: the "Armor Challenge." The agency is hoping that a series of "shoot-outs" will prompt someone to figure out how to create a defensive system that's twice as light as rolled homogeneous armor steel, but still just as good at stopping 7.62mm and.50 cal rounds.

 DARPA Armor Challenge
The Armor Challenge is an opportunity for developers to obtain a rapid and impartial assessment of their existing armor designs with testing of submitted armor panels in a series of “shoot-outs” at a certified ballistics laboratory.
The primary goal for the Armor Challenge is a 50% reduction in weight compared to rolled homogeneous armor (RHA) steel for the following two threats: (1) 7.62mm armor piercing round (specific type to be determined), and (2) 0.50 caliber fragment simulating projectile (FSP).
The Armor Challenge may generate information controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR), 22 CFR 120-130, therefore Armor Challenge selectees may be required to protect information pursuant to ITAR and are encouraged to consider this when proposing.

Armor-piercing ammunition is used to penetrate hardened armored targets such as body armor, vehicle armor, concrete, tanks and other defenses, depending on the caliber of the firearms.
This penetrator is a pointed mass of high-density material that is designed to retain its shape and carry the maximum possible amount of energy as deep as possible into the target.
Depleted-uranium penetrators have the advantage of being pyrophoric and self-sharpening on impact, resulting in incredible heat and energy focused on a minimal area of the target's armor.
