BESANT, Walter., Armorel of Lyonesse: a Romance of To-day...
A crusading spirit infuses much of Besant's best work and it is reasonable to assume that - as a founder member of the Society of Artists - he would have been familiar with the abuse of struggling artists by such a charlatan as his fictional Alec.
The setting of this novel ranges from Amorel's native Scilly Isles (the highest peaks of the lost Lyonesse of Breton legend) to the literary and artistic salons of fashionable London and the seamy parts of town inhabited by the destitute writers and painters.

It was natural that this region should stand for the monarchy, for legendary belief holds that the Scillys are all that are left of royal Lyonesse, the land that sank in the depths of the sea.
From Lyonesse King Arthur came; it was across the dales of Lyonesse that his followers fled when he was slain; and Lyonesse is inseparably connected with the story of Tristram and Ysolte, for Tristram was the son of its king.
Tennyson wrote feelingly of "the sad sea-sounding waves of Lyonesse"; of its "trackless realms," of its glens, all "grey boulder and fl tarn." And he visited Lyonesse.

 LYONNESSE-COMMENTS AND PRONUNCIATION
References to Lyonesse go back only to the 12th century, some time after it was supposedly drowned.
Apart from in an Arthurian context, Lyonesse is first mentioned in an historical sense as a drowned land off Cornwall by William Camden in his 'Britannia' (1586).
In fact in the 19th and early 20th century it is more than likely that the vast majority of the population of east Cornwall had never heard of Lyon(n)esse and never had any occasion to speak it.

South of Bryher lies Samson which is simply two hills (yes, North Hill and South Hill!) joined by a low girdle of land.
This is the legendary setting for Sir Walter Besant's novel 'Armorel of Lyonesse' and there is a ruined cottage where she is reputed to have lived.
More recently, "Why the Whales came", a 1989 film version of Michael Morpurgo's book of the same name set in 1914, was made on Bryher using a cast of local people.
