  Origins of Armory
He states that it is now accepted that the emergence of armory is due to the evolution of military equipment from the late 11th to the mid-12th c, with fighters unrecognizable under their helmets (there is a nice illustration from the 11th century
The question is then to establish a proper chronology of this emergence and of the transformation of these emblems into armory, i.e., constant use of one design by the same person and application of strict rules in the design itself.
Elements from these three sources combined to form armory, which tries to play all three roles at the same time: identify individuals, be transmissible within a family, and represent ownership or claims to fiefs.

Held in the 69th Regiment Armory building in New York City in 1913, the show was criticized by the public and the press as a circus of freaks and clowns, but nonetheless it was a circus full of life and color, and had a great impact on American artists.
Within a few years after the Armory Show, the artistic traditions of several centuries were shaken to the very foundation and the new ‘modern’ art of the twentieth century burst forth, forging the way for a new standard and a new definition of art.
The Armory Show is the successor to the noted Gramercy International Art Fairs that attracted many viewers to their New York, Los Angeles, and Miami shows between 1994 and 1998, and it includes painting, sculpture, drawings, multiples, editions, works on paper, photography, installations, and video.

Marketing Modern Art in America: From the Armory Show to the Department Store
Critics who opposed the Armory Show and the artists it featured claimed a concern not for the stability of bourgeois culture but for the blatant and outspoken relationship between art and advertising and critics, dealers and publicity stunts, as well as the conscious self-promotion by numerous artists.
Since the Armory Show in New York was outside academy and gallery, organizers, representatives and supporters of the exhibition focused on the relationship between cultural democracy and an international, free-market economy, positing the exhibition as a means to release undifferentiated works into a large market where the audience could make choices based on individual preferences.
The organizers of the Armory Show, however, professed a similar egalitarian ideal for art, but they argued that an unjuried, independent exhibition would "let the public decide" where their tastes lay instead of having them subjected to the same aesthetic standards in exhibition after exhibition.
