  Tank - MSN Encarta
The tank was first developed in Britain in 1915, in an attempt to break the deadlock of trench warfare on the Western Front of World War I.
Tanks attempting to fight alone were vulnerable to anti-tank guns and to a range of newly developed infantry anti-tank weapons.
The tanks used by the world’s leading armies today are a far cry from those of World War I. Main battle tanks such as the US M1A2 Abrams, or the British Challenger 2, can cross battlefields at 40 km/h (25 mph) despite weighing over 60 tonnes.

Tanks were first used in World War I to break the deadlock of the trenches, and they evolved gradually to assume the former role of cavalry on the battlefield: to either flank opposing positions with fast movement, or to penetrate defences by massive concentration.
While tanks are expensive to operate and support, they remain among the most formidable and versatile weapons of the modern battlefield, both for their ability to engage other ground targets (including fortifications) and their shock value against infantry.
Tanks are also at a disadvantage in wooded terrain and urban combat environments, which cancel the advantages of the tank's long-range firepower, limit the crew's ability to detect potential threats, and can even limit the turret's ability to traverse.

Tank as used by the Australian Army (Matilda)
Many of the tanks were fitted with a variety of battle-field modifications, including wire mesh over the engine covers, spare track links on the hull and/or pierced steel planking (PSP) which was normally used in the construction of aircraft runways.
On this occasion, a tank assisting the infantry was engaged and disabled at a range of less than 50 meters, by a Japanese 37 mm gun.
Originally, the tank was obtained from the Australian Government for the purpose of establishing it as a memorial in the park at the junction of Parramatta Road and Station Street in Ashfield.

 Anti-tank firepower
The development in armour protection that has taken place in recent years and especially during the 90s has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of many existing anti-tank guns and anti-tank guided weapons.
The main battle tank will remain the foremost among equals in the combined arms team of the future with its firepower, survival and combat mobility on the modern battlefield.
Tanks crossing at short ranges also are very difficult to engage with conventional missile systems.

included consideration of the development of another assault vehicle the characteristics of which were: a minimum of 150mm (6") frontal armour; 60% and 40% of this basis at the side and rear respectively, and a minimum of 25mm on the roof and belly plates.
The War Office, nevertheless, accept the view that a proportion of heavily armoured vehicles may be necessary in the assault phase of future battles, and as initial steps towards meeting this requirement, the addition of armour to the Churchill and the production of Valiant and A.33 prototypes are included in the development programme.
Their recommendations to meet the requirements for a super heavy tank with not less than 8" frontal armour was to proceed with a mock up and preliminary design of the latest type of Tortoise mounting 3" 17-pr or 37pr with limited traverse and auxiliary armament of machine guns.

The 7th Armoured began in Egypt as a collection of independent tank, motorized and armored car units created from the former Cairo Cavalry Brigade and known as the Mobile Force.
The 7th Armoured then withdrew to the Nile Delta to refit, and was not at the front when the German Afrika Korps bundled the British back out of Libya in the spring of 1941.
Afterwards the 7th Armoured refitted and reorganized into three brigades, two tank and one of motorized infantry as British organization finally started to recognize the shortage of foot soldiers in their armored divisions as compared to similar German or Italian formations.

September 15, 2006 Yet another Leonardo da Vinci invention conceived hundreds of years before its time, the armoured tank began its impact on world military history 90 years ago today when it was first deployed by British troops to break the stalemate of trench warfare during the Battle of the Somme.
The tank precipitated the initially cumbersome anti-tank mine, which was so easy to dig up and redeploy against its makers that the smaller, harder-to-detect anti-personnel mine was born, becoming a modern scourge.
Ironically, the German Army against which the armoured tank was first deployed, used the tank as one of the cornerstones of its highly effective
