Armoured personnel carriers (APCs) are light armoured fighting vehicles for the transport of infantry.
They usually have only a machine gun although variants carry recoilless rifles, anti-tank guided missiles(ATGMs), or mortars.
They are not really designed to take part in a direct-fire battle, but to carry the troops to the battlefield safe from shrapnel and ambush.

 Armoured fighting vehicle Summary
For example, armoured personnel carriers were generally replaced by infantry fighting vehicles in a very similar role, but the latter has some capabilities lacking in the former.
The first attempt to carry troops in an armoured tracked vehicle was made by the British in the First World War, a lengthened Mark V that could house a squad of infantry while still armed as a tank.
They are different from earlier APCs by their heavier armament allowing them to give direct-fire support during an assault, firing ports allowing the infantry to fire personal weapons while mounted, and improved armour.

The family of vehicles included the personnel carrier, mortar carrier, command vehicle, fitters vehicle, recovery vehicle and ambulance, all of which were employed in the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.

 M113 Armored Personnel Carrier
In a remarkably short period, the Army produced the M41, M47, and M48 tanks, and it soon produced the M59 armored personnel carrier and began developing the APC M113.
A program to produce ground and air vehicles with the necessary battlefield mobility led to the development of armored personnel carriers, such as the M113 with aluminum armor, that could move troops rapidly to the scene of operations while providing greater protection for the individual Soldier.
The M113 APC was the first modern "battle taxi"; developed to transport infantry forces on the mechanized battlefield.

IFVs are similar to armoured personnel carriers (APCs), designed to transport five to ten infantrymen and their equipment.
They are differentiated from APCs ("battle taxis") by their enhanced armament, allowing them to give direct-fire support during an assault, firing ports, allowing the infantry to fire personal weapons while mounted, and usually improved armour.
Its steeply-sloped front armour was proof against NATO's.50-calibre machine gun, while its smoothbore gun and ATGM were a threat to NATO personnel carriers and even main battle tanks.

 The Canadian Kangaroos
The Canadian Armoured Corps, which provided most of the personnel for the Kangaroos as well as the basis for their administration and employment, was itself a relatively new service, having only been constituted just a few short years before.
At this point the combat strength of the Regiment was 106 carriers, and it was contemplated increasing the two existing squadrons to four, but this move was held in abeyance indefinitely, due to the logistical difficulties.
By now, 1CACR also had a sister regiment in the 79th Armoured Division, the British 49th Armoured Personnel Carrier Regiment (also equipped with Ram Kangaroos), and it was determined that, between the two, the assault requirements of 21st Army Group would be satisfied.

The reduction of the number of infantrymen carried by the APCs is a trend well consolidated and probably inevitable (if you want vehicles with a acceptable size and good mobility, armour, armament and crew accommodation) but surely not a positive thing.

 Armoured recovery vehicle at AllExperts
An armoured recovery vehicle (ARV) is a type of armoured fighting vehicle used to repair battle-damaged or broken-down armoured vehicles during combat, or to tow them off the battlefield for more extensive repairs.
ARVs are normally built on the chassis of a main battle tank (MBT), but some are also constructed on the basis of other armoured fighting vehicles, mostly armoured personnel carriers (APCs).
The first true ARVs were introduced in World War II, often by converting obsolete or damaged tanks, usually by removing the turret and installing a heavy-duty winch to free stuck vehicles, plus a variety of vehicle repair tools.
