Armstrong.- Area, 610 square miles; population in 1880, 47,641.
The Barren measures are 600 feet thick, including the Mahoning Sandstone at the bottom, the long horizontal outcrops of which edge all the valleys of the county with cliffs, and rough their steep slopes with fallen rocks.

Adam was born in 1752 in Cumberland County, in the area which today is Perry County, Pa. In 1794, he and wife Margaret Elizabeth Wallace Maxwell (born c.1765 in Fulton County, Pa.) came from Derry Township, Westmoreland County, to settle in the area which today is North Buffalo Township.
Adam enrolled in the Pennsylvania militia June 10, 1777, and served a short while as a private before advancing to the rank of second lieutenant during the Revolutionary War.
He probably made an improvement and settlement on his tract about 1796, at all events before 1805, for in that year he was assessed with the land, two horses and three cattle, at $318, and the next year at $258.

Mother Bedford refers to a part of the region in south-central Pennsylvania which was erected as a county in 1771 out of lands obtained by treaty from the Indians in 1754 and 1768.
When Bedford County was erected out of Cumberland County, she encompassed the present-day counties of Huntingdon, Fulton, Blair, Bedford, Cambria, Somerset, Westmoreland, Fayette, Washington and Greene, along with portions of the present-day counties of Centre, Indiana, Armstrong, Allegheny and Beaver.
