Fairey Gannet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Double Mamba (also commonly called the "Twin Mamba") was selected, driving two counter-rotating propellors through a common gearbox.
The Double Mamba engine could be cruised with one of the engines stopped, to conserve fuel and extend endurance.
The pilot sits over the gas turbine engine atop the fuselage and behind the double, co-axial, contra-rotating propellors; the one (or two) crew sit in additional cockpit stations behind the pilot.

Armstrong-Siddeley Double Mamba - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Double Mamba (also known as the Twin Mamba) was a development of the Armstrong-Siddeley Mamba with two Mambas driving through a combining gearbox.
The Double Mamba was an Armstrong-Siddeley gas turbine turboprop engine design of around 3,000–4,000 hp (2,500–3,000 kW).
The Double Mamba engine was also proposed for the Westland Westminster, a 30-seat helicopter that was later prototyped with another engine.

The Breguet Alize & Fairey Gannet
The Double Mamba was what would now be called a "twin pac" engine, with two turboprop engines driving a common gearbox, which in turn drove a contrarotating propeller system with four blades per propeller.
The Double Mamba was one of the first such schemes to prove workable, though now double turboshafts are fairly common powerplants for helicopters.
The vertical tailplane was raised in height to aerodynamically compensate for the radome.

However, it was decided to concentrate work on the Double Mamba- two of the engines mounted together and driving contrarotating propellers.
As with most turboprops, the Mamba was much lighter than the Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp radial that it was replacing (the radial weight about 1450 pounds compared to the 1000 pounds of the turboprop) so the engines had to be mounted in greatly extended nacelles.
The sleek nacelles housing the Mambas were quite attractive on the Dakota and flight tests proved that the engine was fairly reliable.

The Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba ASMD1 engine provided 2950ehp and was basically two Mamba engines mounted side-by-side, linked to a common gearbox and driving contra-rotating, co-axial propellers - however, despite all this, the aircraft was underpowered.
To cope with the extra weight of all the equipment, a new version of the Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba engine was introduced, the 112 engine which provided 3875ehp and produced what can only be described as a distinctive noise.
The pilots cockpit remained virtually identical to the AS version, but in the AEW version the two radar operators were located in a cramped cabin buried in the fuselage and accessed by way of a door above the wing trailing edge.

The Gannet was to have been replaced by the Hawker Siddeley (formerly Blackburn Aircraft, Brough) P139B during the early 1970’s.
A COD or carrier-on-deck version of this aircraft was also planned, for the carriage of urgent stores from shore base to the carrier group.
The prototype AEW Gannet flew in August 1958 and a total 44 AEW Gannets were built, again serving in the front line with 849 NAS, from February 1960.
