Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth and Co Ltd was a major British manufacturing company of the early years of the 20th century.
Headquartered in Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne, Armstrong Whitworth engaged in the construction of armaments, ships, locomotives, automobiles, and aircraft.
The company was formed in 1897 as a merger of the engineering firms of William Armstrong and Joseph Whitworth.

At the International Aviation Fair in Gothenburg, ILUG 23, the new double-seated biplane AW Siskin Mk IIA was exhibited.
One aircraft of this type arrived to Sweden and was sent to Kiruna, a town north of the Arctic Circle, for winter trials together with a Bristol Fighter F.2B.
However, the Siskin crashed in summer 1926 due to a pilot mistake.

The Armstrong Whitworth "Siskin" was one of the first fighter aircraft to be developed by the RAF after World War I. It was introduced into the RAF in 1924 and remained in service until 1932.
The Siskin was a superb aerobatic aircraft and presented thrilling exhibitions of flying at every RAF display from 1925 to 1931.
The Siskin aircraft remained with this unit until the outbreak of the Second World War eventually to be replaced by modern Hawker Hurricanes in 1939.

Armament comprised two 7.7mm machine guns, and the Siskin V was the recipient of an order for 70 examples from the Romanian government.
Production was initiated early in 1925, but in March of that year one of the Romanian Siskin Vs was destroyed in a crash while being flown in the UK by a Romanian test pilot, and the order was cancelled.
The Siskin IV, the sole example of which was built for the 1925 King's Cup Race, was similar.

Derived from the Siddeley S.R.2 Siskin, a single-seat fighter of 1919 built by the Siddeley Deasy Car Co Ltd, the Siskin II was evolved after the latter concern acquired in 1921 the name and goodwill of Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd, which had closed down its aviation department.
Powered by a 325hp Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar I 14-cylinder two-row radial, the Siskin II appeared in August 1922 as a two-seater, a second prototype which followed in October 1923 being completed as a single-seat fighter.
The first prototype was later modified as a single-seater, but the Siskin II failed to attract orders, and the second prototype was eventually sold to the Swedish Air Force.

The three-engined Argosy was the first civil aircraft designed by Armstrong Whitworth; it was produced in response to an Imperial Airways requirement for a multi-engined airliner for its European routes.
Armstrong Whitworth was establsihed in 1914 and built observation aircraft during World War I. Between the wars, Armstrong Whitworth built some outstanding aircraft, including the Siskin single-seat fighter and the Scimitar fighter, which in 1934 was among the world's fastest fighters.
In 1936, Armstrong Whitworth became a member company in the new Hawker Siddeley Group.

The largest pieces of Siskin that I have seen to date in Canada, is a complete engine and propeller in a small museum in Carlingford Ont. The engine and propeller are in good shape.
As late as the 40s there was a decrepit Siskin airframe in Kingston, Ontario (in the Armoury there, iirc) but that is of course long gone; it was probably the sole extant Siskin at that point.
The Siskin was the RAF's first fighter with an all-metal structure (the contemporary Gamecock was the last with a primarily wooden structure) and replication of a metal airframe is more complex than doing the same in wood.
