  Army Wound Ribbon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Army Wound Ribbon was a short lived decoration of the United States Army which was created on September 6, 1917 to recognize those soldiers who had received combat wounds during World War I.
The Wound Ribbon was only issued until October 12, 1917 and the following year was replaced with the Wound Chevron.
The Army Wound Ribbon is considered a predecessor decoration of the Purple Heart.

 Federal Military Ribbon Awards
The first ribbon award is probably the least known: the Army's Wound Ribbon, established in September of 1917 but rescinded in January of 1918.
They use a cravate (ribbon) which is attached to the staff that carries the colors, and when a unit is cited in orders of the army for extraordinary services a Croix de Guerre is attached to the cravate.
The Army directed that one decoration per streamer would be used, and the streamers were to be the colors of the corresponding ribbon of the decoration, with the name of the action for which it was awarded embroidered thereon.

The topic of Imperial Wound Badges is a subject to be studied in itself, and what follows is obviously a brief summary as it relates to the 1939 issue.
The Imperial Wound badge was oval with laurels, a ribbon at the base and in the center an Imperial helmet with a pair of swords behind it.
On June 3rd, 1918, the Bavarian War Ministry declared that the Wound Badge was an “award”, not a “decoration” and on June 24th the Kaiser introduced the Naval Wound Badge, which was to be awarded in the same grades as the Army and under the same regulations.

Second Lieutenant Audie L. Murphy, 01692509, 15th Infantry, Army of the United States, on 26 January 1945, near Holtzwihr, France, commanded Company B, which was attacked by six tanks and waves of infantry.
He received a leg wound but ignored it and continued the single-handed fight until his ammunition was exhausted.

Personnel with self-inflicted wounds or those who had lost the right to wear medals in the case of criminal delinquency or who died of their wounds or in other circumstances were exempted from receiving this decoration.
In face of this last announcement it seems clear that only a very small number of medals would have been awarded regularly before the war's end, but the medals and ribbons were produced and surely the majority of the awardees received their medals after the war directly from the producers.

 Wound Badges
The history of the German wound badge dates back to World War I. Kaiser Wilhelm II established the first German Military Wound badge (Verwundetenzbzeichen) on March 3rd, 1918, with a the declaration stating that it would be presented in 3 grades.
It was to awarded in fl for one to two wounds, in silver for three to four wounds, and in gold for five wounds or more.
On January 30th, 1936, with Hitler in power and the Army gaining full momentum, the Ministry of Interior issued a declaration stating that all those who were wounded during World War I and never received their Wound Badge could now do so through the proper channels.

The German Army is reported to have utilized approximately 30.,000 of the animals for messenger and ambulance service, The French and Belgian Armies employed them on a smaller scale for messenger, ambulance, and draft work.
In the absence of any definite policy on the part of the Army Ground Forces regarding their use the training of tactical dogs in 1942 and 1943 was necessarily limited and experimental, Military officers generally were unfamiliar with the possible utilization of these animals in combat and rather skeptical of their value.
While the Army could not absolutely guarantee the future behavior of any returned dog nor assume any responsibility once it had left Army jurisdiction there were very few complaints as to the behavior of the 3,000 odd dogs discharged from the service.
