The army has five tactical area commands: the Northern Command headquartered at Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir, the Western Command headquartered at Chandimandir in Chandigarh, the Central Command headquartered at Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, the Eastern Command headquartered at Calcutta, and the Southern Command headquartered at Pune in Maharashtra.

India has long accused Pakistan of waging a "proxy war" against it by allowing Islamic militant groups to recruit, raise funds and train in camps on its soil and in the portion of the disputed Kashmir region that Pakistan controls.

The expedition was unique in the sense that it was for the first time that the Indian Army and the Royal Bhutan Army jointly undertook a multi-disciplinary expedition.

Stressing that the LTTE remains a banned organisation in India, Singh said the government would be ``guided in its responses'' to developments in the island nation, and was committed to the peaceful resolution of the conflict within the ``framework of a united Sri Lanka where all communities can realise their aspirations.''

June: Completed Gunnery Course at Larkhill and was posted to 69 Fd Bty R.A. (6th Fd Bde) at Bordon.
Remained in Sydney until 11th July staying with the Morcombes at 36 Gurner Street.
Saw Phil Morcombe for one day only - his boat sailed for India on 25th June, his leave having expired.
