The Army of Northern Virginia was the primary military force of the Confederate States of America in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War.
The Army originated as the (Confederate) Army of the Potomac, which was organized on June 20, 1861, from all operational forces in northern Virginia.
The Army of the Peninsula was merged in April 12, 1862.

Gathering at the headquarters of the Army of the Potomac (later renamed the Army of Northern Virginia) were generals Joseph Johnston, G.T. Beauregard, Gustavus Smith and Congressman William Porcher Miles, then an aide on Beauregard’s staff.
Army Quartermaster Colin M. Selph bought the entire silk supply of Richmond for making the flags (and the only red-like colors available in bulk were either pink or rose, hence these flags being of lighter shades).
By the Spring of 1862, the battle flag of the Confederate Army of the Potomac was neither widely distributed to the forces in Virginia nor was it the only battle flag in use.

To obtain closer organization in the various commands operating in Virginia, President Lincoln, on June 26, 1862, constituted the Army of Virginia out of Major-General Fremont's forces (Mountain Department), those of Major-General McDowell (Department of the Rappahannock), those of Major-General Banks (Department of the Shenandoah), and Brigadier-General Sturgis' brigade from the Military District of Washington.
A corps of the Army of Virginia checked " Stonewall " Jackson's advance at Cedar Mountain, on August 9th, but the entire organization was defeated at Manassas by Jackson and Longstreet, August 29th and 30th, and withdrew to the lines of Washington.
On September 12th, the Army of Virginia was merged in the Army of the Potomac.

The Army of Virginia was organized as a major unit of the Union Army and operated briefly and unsuccessfully in 1862 in the American Civil War.
The entire army was soundly defeated at the Second Battle of Bull Run by Jackson, Longstreet, and Lee, and withdrew to the defensive lines of Washington, D.C. On September 12, 1862, the units of the Army of Virginia were merged into the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Virginia was never reconstituted.

 IMA Hero: Robert E. Lee HH
Robert E. Lee was a brilliant general and military strategist for the Confederate Army during the American Civil War.
Being a scout for the U.S. Army was a dangerous assignment because he often came in close contact with enemy troops while scouting their location.
It is a memorial to Robert and is part of the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

Virginia was by far the richest farmland for food in the South, and Pennsylvania was the easiest of the northern states to access because no river separated North from South there.
And whereas the Army of Tennessee met it's ultimate demise as an organized fighting force at the Battle of Nashville in late 1864, Lee's army met it's end in an almost too romantic way; fading off into history in Appomattox Court House, proud to the end.
McPherson stated that the Confederate armies were more suseptible to this than the Union armies (which he says had no large scale revivals) especially after the reverses at Gettysburg, and Vicksburg, when the feelings of defeat hung in the air.

This particular design is unique to the Army of Northern Virginia, and is not representative of other flags, in particular that of the Army of Tennessee, whose flag is closer to what is usually represented as "The" Confederate flag.
The battle flag of the famous Confederate Army of Northern Virginia was altered in the design phase in order to make it easier to manufacture.
Curiously, in early 1864, the battle flags for Johnston's new command, the Army of Tennessee, would receive rectangular Southern Cross flags from the Atlanta Depot - who evidently erred in making them since Johnston's orders called for "flags like those of the Virginia army." These, of course, as we now know, were square.
