The Forty-seventh Tennessee, Colonel Hill, arrived on the field on the 7th; the Alabama and Arkansas battalions of the Third Brigade, Withers' division, not in the battle.
Tennessee was represented on all parts of the field and in all commands.
The sons of Tennessee, of every rank, were conspicuous for dash and steadiness in action, and for the maintenance of regimental and company organizations under all conditions.

Adjoining the mountains to the west and in between them and the Cumberland table-land, is the valley of east Tennessee, a succession of ridges and minor valleys running in almost unbroken lines from north-east to south-west.
At the time of this expedition Tennessee was unoccupied except by the Cherochee Indians, who inhabited that part bordering on the Tennessee River; the Choctaws, the upper Cumberland; the Shawnees, the lower Cumberland; and the Chickasaws used and claimed the territory between the Tennessee and the Mississippi rivers, now west of Tennessee.
Tennessee was the only one of the seceding states to abolish slavery by its own act.

Grant occupied Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, awaiting the arrival of Major General Don Carlos Buell 's Army of the Ohio from Nashville.
The plan was to attack Grant's left and separate the Union army from its gunboat support (and avenue of retreat) on the Tennessee River, driving it west into the swamps of Snake and Owl Creeks, where it could be destroyed.
Buell's army was still too far away to affect the action that morning.

Finally, while the "Army of the West" was at Corinth, Mississippi in May and early June of 1862 the new battle flag was finally implemented for the "Army of the West".
By the battle of Corinth, Mississippi on 3-4 October 1862, the Army of the West was fully equipped with flags of this pattern.
It is surprising, therefore, that portions of his army in Mississippi and Vicksburg adopted a distinctive pattern of battle flag in at least two color patterns and both employing the Christian or "Latin cross" as their main element.

Sterling Price’s Confederate Army of the West marched from Baldwyn to Ripley where it joined Maj. Gen.
Since the Siege of Corinth, in the spring, Union forces had erected various fortifications, an inner and intermediate line, to protect Corinth, an important transportation center.
As a result, Van Dorn was defeated, but not destroyed or captured, at Hatchie Bridge, Tennessee, on October 5.
