The Army of the Cumberland was one of the principal Union armies in the Western Theater during the American Civil War, formerly known as the Army of the Ohio.
The army fought under the name Army of the Ohio until Major General William S. Rosecrans assumed command of the army and the Department of the Cumberland and changed the name of the combined entity to the Army of the Cumberland.
William T. Sherman assumed command of all Union armies in the West and created an army group of the Army of the Cumberland, the Army of the Tennessee, and the Army of the Ohio and marched towards Atlanta.

In the meanwhile, Hood was faced in Tennessee by the army's old enemy, the Army of the Cumberland, under George H. Thomas, as well as the Army of the Ohio under John Schofield.

Well was he called the "Rock of Chickamauga", and trebly well for the Army of the Cumberland that George H. Thomas was in command of the left at that battle.
General Thomas is given command of the Army of the Cumberland in October.
It does not allow the gallant Army of Tennessee time to re-group and completes the wreckage of Hood's army as rebel stragglers by the thousands try but are unable to rejoin, and decide to leave the war for good.

Daniel believes that the final general of the Army of the Cumberland, General Thomas, had flaws in that he was too slow like Buell, but gradually improved over time.
This is a crtical and very readable history of the Army of the Cumberland, but Daniel leaves out how regimental dynamics such as those mentioned in Gerald Prokopowicz's book impeded the Army's military effectiveness.
More modern research has clearly shown this episode to be false and Daniel has performed a disservice to the history of the Army of the Cumberland by blowing his chance to set the record straight on this key episode at Chickamauga.

He entered the United States Army at the outbreak of the Civil War, serving as Captain, 77th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry from October 28, 1861 to February 1, 1863.
