The Army of West Virginia was a short-lived military force during the Civil War that served in the Union Army in southwestern Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley.
When Crook assumed command of the Department of West Virginia, replacing David Hunter, the separate units in the department were organized into the VIII Corps, and Crook carried the name Army of West Virginia over to this new organization.
The old Army of West Virginia (as the VIII Corps) later fought with distinction at the battles of Opequon, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek.

West Point — A Hawaii-based Army officer died Wednesday of what appear to be natural causes while on a summer mission to train cadets here in the nuts and bolts of being a soldier.
Compton was the executive officer of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment from the 25th Infantry Division based at Hawaii's Schofield Barracks.
Compton joined the Army in 1988, according to Capt. Kathy Turner, spokeswoman for the 25th Infantry Division.

West, 34, died when the vehicle he was riding in collided head-on with another vehicle near Hillah, according to a DoD announcement on Wednesday.
