  Military rank
A separate set of ranks was also used for secular, and occasionally ecclesiastic, rulers, as discussed in Ranks of nobility and peerage.
The Chinese People's Liberation Army of the 1960s and 1970s is a rare example of a military which attempted (quite unsuccessfully) to abolish rank.
The use of formalized ranks came into widespread use with the Roman Legions, after the introduction of reforms by the consul Gaius Marius which were completed around 60 CE.

 Expanding Warrant Officer Ranks
In terms of rank, they fall between enlisted personnel and commissioned officers, and under current policy are selected from the enlisted ranks depending on their occupational specialties.
In the report, CBO suggests expanding the warrant officer ranks by converting top-level enlisted positions into warrant officers, transferring more occupational specialists to warrant officers and changing promotion practices to focus on technical competence rather than the completion of a certain set of assignments.
While warrant officers have about 30 percent higher pay and greater status than top enlisted personnel, their rank is still "undoubtedly the least studied and least understood of the three main groups of military personnel," CBO said.

Navies have military rank systems that often are quite different from those of armies or air forces.
Exceptions are the Swedish Navy and Republic of Singapore Navy, where "captain" refers to the same rank in the navy as in the army.
In such navies, the captains and lieutenants of smaller ships are therefore unlikely to have the naval rank of "captain" or "lieutenant" respectively; and furthermore a naval "captain" is therefore equivalent to an army colonel, and a naval "lieutenant" to an army captain.
