 Joint Electronics Type Designation System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
JETDS was adopted February 16, 1943 by the Joint Communications Board for all new Army and Navy airborne, radio, and radar equipment.
The Joint Electronics Type Designation System (JETDS), which was previously known as the Joint Army-Navy Nomenclature System (AN System) and the Joint Communications-Electronics Nomenclature System, is a method developed by the U.S. War Department during World War II for assigning an unclassified designator to electronic equipment.
Subsystems ("groups") are designated by a two letter code, followed by a number, followed by slash and one, two or three letters from the three letter codes for systems.

System designators were formed from the prefix "AN/", three letters specifying the installation type, equipment type, and purpose, a hyphen, a numeric designator, and possibly a suffix to indicate a modification of the basic system.
Preliminary models of equipments, intended to become the property of the Navy under the terms of a contract, were given an "X" prefix letter, separated from the basic designation by a dash.
