When Arnett Cobb gets on the bandstand there is always a hush from the audience - especially the few people on hand who've never seen him before or haven't seen him in 30 years.
Cobb displays his heart and soul here, but not without the dirty grift in his playing that would draw sidelong glances at a Southern Baptist church.
Cobb's quavering vibrato on the melody is deep and smooth - there are breezes and canyons in his playing that he saves up for ballads.

Cobb's ballad mastery is apparent on "Ghost of a Chance" and "Blues in My Heart." Also of interest is the work of Buster Cooper, rarely heard in a small-group blowing session, and the rock-solid bass work of George Duvivier, a graduate of Cobb's band of the early Fifties.
Arnett Cobb was the very archetype of the Texas tenor.

CD Review of Arnett Cobb - Movin’ Right Along on Prestige @ jazzreview.com
Arnett Cobb is “Movin’ Right Along” on all eight tracks that encompass this original jazz classic.
There is a steady funky beat throughout the recording; it is clearly a well-conceived mixture of soul and jazz with Cobb leading the way with his vital tenor saxophone playing.
The rest of the band reciprocates Cobb’s pleasingly inspired blowing by playing with him and complimenting him at the same time, which is not always the easiest task to accomplish depending on the lead instrument and the musician’s proficiency.

Reissued for Fantasy's Original Jazz Classics line, these OJCs are by heroes of the tenor who range from down-home soul-jazzers (Arnett Cobb and Gene Ammons) to a lyrical Lester Young disciple (Paul Quinichette) to a forceful hard bopper/post-bopper who apprecated the energies of the avant-garde (Booker Ervin).
Cobb really digs into material ranging from “Down By The Riverside” to “Sometimes I'm Happy,” and his own “Blue Me” shows how convincing he was on a 12-bar blues.
Like Cobb, Chicago's Gene Ammons was a very accessible player who liked his jazz earthy, soulful and emotionally direct.
