Bax wrote string quartets and quintets, an interesting Viola Sonata, three Violin Sonatas and works for larger instrumental groups, including a Nonet for wind and string instruments and an Octet for horn, piano and string sextet.
Bax's choral works include settings of traditional carols, while his solo songs allow him to explore more Celtic ground in a variety of settings, ranging from A Celtic Song Cycle to settings of poems by James Joyce, J.M. Synge, and by the English writers A.E. Housman and his brother, the writer Clifford Bax.
Bax wrote seven piano sonatas, some unpublished, and a number of pieces for piano solo or duo, many with evocative titles.

Arnold Edward Trevor Bax (November 8, 1883 - October 3, 1953), composer, was born in Streatham, London, to prosperous upper-middle-class parents.
After the war Bax turned from piano music to symphonies and in a seventeen-year period from 1922 to 1939 produced seven, earning him a reputation as Elgar's successor.
Bax was knighted in 1937 and became Master of the King's Music in 1942, when he began writing film music.

Parlett: Catalogue of music by Bax
Bax reworked a theme from the first movement as the piano piece A Hill Tune (1920, GP232) and later revised the slow movement as Lyrical Interlude (GP261).
Bax was in the first flush of his relationship with Mary Gleaves at the time of its conception, a fact which casts strange light on the second movement's insistence on the theme associated with Harriet Cohen, as in November Woods (1917, GP191) and A Romance (1918, GP206).
Bax described its first two movements as "severely classical… as to the last [mostly in 5/8 time] it might have a quotation from Hamlet: 'This is miching mallecho - it means mischief'".

Sir Arnold Bax   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
It is common knowledge that as well as being a composer Arnold Bax was a prolific man of letters, with four plays, at least thirty short stories, and over 300 poems to his name - or rather to that of his alter ego, Dermot O'Byrne.
These are interspersed with sections on two of Bax's principal girlfriends, Isobel Hodgson and Mary Field, with transcriptions of his letters to them, and there are also pages on his wife, Elsita, and on Harriet Cohen, the woman for whom he left her.
Bax was an inveterate reader of verse, and the main influences on his own early poetry include such figures as Yeats, AE, Macleod, and Swinburne.

SIR ARNOLD BAX, COMPOSER: His Life & Music: a Brief Overview
Bax represents the next generation of British composers after Elgar: Bax was a young man when Elgar was at the peak of his creative powers.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Bax was a major figure in British music; his symphonies were considered significant works at the times of their premieres and were conducted by major interpreters such as Sir John Barbirolli and Sir Thomas Beecham.
Bax was very fond of the sea and seascapes, and his music reflects this: his violent music is not unlike a musical depiction of fierce waves crashing against a rocky landscape; the delicate music could easily be a musical depiction of bright sunlight and a gentle breeze caressing the water.

Bax completed the Third of his seven symphonies in early 1929.
Bax's third symphony is not an easy work; it is full of tempo changes and subtle rubati that make the job of the conductor difficult.
Bax had heard this symphony performed many times in the 1930s (it was famous enough for the British Council to award it a recording grant); he was a friend of Barbirolli and it is fair to say that Barbirolli's version closely met with Bax's approval.

Film Music of Sir Arnold Bax, The - Music from the Movies
The music of Sir Arnold Bax is deservedly experiencing something of a renaissance with an unprecedented amount available on recently released albums.
The final track is a truly magnificent, triumphal march, which is echoed in some of the composer’s later classical works to celebrate the end of the war and the subsequent coronation.
It is sad that these two scores represent virtually everything Sir Arnold Bax wrote for the cinema (except for a short film in 1951), but Chandos does great justice to his work.

Modern classical music refers to music written in the 20th century and beyond.
Although much of it draws heavily on earlier forms, modern composers also experimented with rejection of long-held ideas; notably, Arnold Schoenberg questioned the traditional notions of harmony with his twelve-tone system, and John Cage questioned the very definition of music with his use of chance and found sounds.
