Riefenstahl |
 | | Considered in some quarters the nearest thing to a war criminal and in others a film genius, Leni Riefenstahl symbolizes the fate of a naïve actress and director prompted to deal with devilsdevils on the order of Adolf Hitler, who sparked her film career, and Joseph Goebbels, who almost as quickly curtailed it. |
 | | As a young woman, Riefenstahl initially studied and performed modern dance (an avocation that would surface in some of her own films) before she was asked by director Arnold Fanck to appear in his dramatic features about skiers and mountain climbers braving avalanches and gorges. |
 | | While starring in these films, she learned production techniques, especially the value of location shooting and aerial photography, for which Fanck's films were well known. |
