Arnold started his career in London way back in 1970, managing record stores until 1975.

It was not until the late 1980s that the ABC was finally able to begin to development of the long-delayed national "youth network" and in 1989 JJJ expanded nationally to Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Brisbane, Newcastle, and Canberra.
Long serving former program director Arnold Frolows was also regularly criticised, and there was certainly some irony in the fact that the self-proclaimed "youth network", which was aimed at the 16-25 age group, was by the late 1990s still being programmed by a man in his late 40s.
In May 2003, Arnold Frolows, the only remaining link with the original Double Jay staff of 1975, stepped down after 28 years as Triple J music director.

 MILESAGO - What's New? - March-June 2003
Over the years Arnold has had his fair share of critics and in recent times many whingers have predictably harped on the irony that the Yoof Network was being programmed by a guy in his fifties.
But it's undeniable that Arnold has a rare talent and was the X-factor that kept Triple-J at the cutting edge of what was happening in music for almost twenty years -- an incredible achievement in the cutthroat, fad-driven, emphemeral world of rock and rock radio.
It's also undeniable that, taken overall, for most of Arnold's period as MD Triple J programming comprehensively shat all over the competition in terms of the quality and variety of the music it played.

Arnold Frolows yesterday demonstrated to even the most dim-witted onlookers - that means you, ABC management - that he's not fit to hold the job of music director at national youth broadcaster JJJ.
Frolows agreed to pull from air new Radiohead tracks that the station had downloaded off the internet (possibly from here or here).
It should be abundantly clear by now that Frolows has no idea what he's doing.

The national youth broadcaster is being relaunched in an effort to bring back its traditional audience of 16 to 24-year-olds.
Coincidentally, long-term music director Arnold Frolows recently retired from the position, paving the way for Kingsmill to take over.
Kingsmill's appointment has pleased staff at the station and parts of the music community but, at 39, Kingsmill is fair game for the same criticism that dogged Arnold Frolows in his final years: he's too old.

EMI says it's not OK, computer - smh.com.au
ABC youth radio network Triple J has promised not to play any more pirated material from the upcoming Radiohead album after it became the first radio station in the world this week to download and air the unreleased songs.
He said that when Frolows called EMI to advise that the songs were about to be played, "we spoke to them and [made TripleJ] aware it was infringing copyright" and could "short-change the band" by hurting sales of the album.
However, although EMI was involved in a "rolling process" of encouraging websites to remove the material by reminding them of copyright legislation, Mr O'Donnell said there were no plans to take action against TripleJ - described as "Radiohead's traditional home" - nor to bring forward the album's release date to thwart further pirating.

Arnold - can anyone read the use-by date?
Yeah Ben, could not agree more - Arnold has well and truly become an embarrassment to the ABC.
The JJJ programming is incoherent (Gerling's latest drivel, anyone?), and he has veered further away from his job description and started to act in an even more totally autocratic manner.

Last week’s replacement of Arnold Frolows after 18 years, with Richard Kingsmill in the music director’s chair seems to have the thumbs-up from Triple J listeners - according to comments in forums on websites as ABC Online and Rocknerd (which in April demanded Frolows’ resignation).
Frolows, rightly or wrongly, was blamed for appearances of the likes of Eminem on the playlist, trying to keep a balance between old and new listeners, and regional and metropolitan listeners.
Speculation in the industry is that J will go the dance/ rap road to entice more younger listeners from Nova and reposition itself before the launch of Radio FBi.

The sacking of Baker upset some die-hard fans and critics who felt that the group was losing touch with its "indie" roots, and Faulkner is said to have written the song 'Poison Pen' in response to some of the critical articles in the music press written about Baker's departure.
