Jacobs believed in reducing the very complex issues of physically playing the instrument into simple terms, ideas, and concepts so as to not distract the player from the most important aspect of being a musician: keeping the musical thoughts foremost.
What was so valuable about studying with Jacobs was his ability to help players, approach their playing from the “psychology” of playing the instrument and to get players to realize they have to send the pitch and the quality of sound, from the brain to the lip.
Jacobs would begin helping players retrain their ears through singing and recalling pitches: by buzzing note patterns and musical segments on the mouthpiece, and then playing the same notes or passages on the horn.
