Arnulf I of Flanders (died 965), known as Arnulf the Great, was count of Flanders from 918 to 965.
Arnulf was the son of count Baldwin II of Flanders.
Arnulf's eldest son and heir Baldwin III died in 962, so Arnulf was succeeded by Baldwin's infant son, Arnulf II of Flanders.

He was the eldest son of Baldwin V of Flanders and Adela Capet, a daughter of king Robert II of France.
The young Arnulf III was killed the next year at the Battle of Cassel and Baldwin's younger son eventually became Baldwin II of Hainaut.

Baldwin III died in 962, when Arnulf was just an infant, and with Arnulf's grandfather count Arnulf I of Flanders still alive.
By the time Arnulf attained his majority in 976, Flanders had lost some of the southern territory acquired by Arnulf I. The latter had given some parts of Picardy to King Lothar of France to help assure his grandson's succession, and gave Boulogne as a fief to another relative.

Baldwin III ruled briefly as joint count with his father Arnulf I, but died before his father.
If this is accurate, Baldwin III would be the only count of Flanders named Baldwin who would make a chronologically feasible father for Ascelin.
His biography in DBF [3, 1238-40] states that he was very probably the son of Arnulf I, and then contradicts this statement by calling Arnulf II a brother of Ascelin.
