This Arnulf (Arnoul) passed his earlier life at the court of Theodebert II, king of Austrasia; through the marriage of his elder son with a daughter of Pepin of Landen St. Begga), he became an ancestor of the Carolingian dynasty.
Arnulf made further attempts to resign his offices, but it was not till 629 that he was able to retire to the Vosges mountains.

Arnulf was obliged to flee the country, but after a Swabian victory over the followers of the king he returned to Bavaria and established himself at Salzburg and Regensburg (Ratisbon).
The synod threatened Arnulf with excommunication in case he did not present himself by 7 October before a synod at Regensburg.
Arnulf died 14 July, 937, and was buried in the church of St. Emmeram in Regensburg.
