Of Walters younger sons, Robert was given by Henry I. the barony of Little Easton, Essex; Maurice obtained the stewardship (dapiferatus) of the great Suffolk abbey of Bury St Edmunds; Reinald the stewardship to Henry I.s queen, Adeliza; and Gerald (also a dapifer) became the ancestor of the FitzGeralds.
As constable and captain of the castle that Arnulf de Montgomery raised at Pembroke, Gerald strengthened his position in Wales by marrying Nesta, sister of Griffith, prince of South Wales, who bore to him famous children, by whom the southern coast of Wales was saved for the English and the brilwarks of Ireland stormed.
Of these sons William, the eldest, was succeeded by his son Odo, who was known as de Carew, from the fortress of that name at the neck of the Pembroke peninsula, the eldest son Gerald having been slain by the Welsh.

Notes 5-11 Chronicle, Manx Soc vol 22
Robert made an alliance with the three Welsh princes, Jorwerth, Cadogan, and Meredith, sons of Blethyn, and Arnulf sought the alliance of Muircertach, asking, through ambassadors, his daughter Lafracot in marriage, to which Muircertach immediately gave his consent, promising not only to support Arnulf against the English king, but also to make him his successor.
In this manner a rather strong league bad been formed against King Henry ; and as the allied lords and princes, especially the two Montgomerys, as avengers of their brother, must at the same time have been the enemies of King Magnus, this prince was consequently brought somehow into a friendly relation with the English.
It has already been mentioned that the Saga wrongly speaks of this marriage as having taken place during the former expedition of Magnus, and that it likewise wrongly makes Magnus and Muircertach together conquer Dublin in 1102, this conquest having been effected during the first expedition of Magnus in 1093.

The Castles and Bishops' Palaces of Pembrokeshire by Lise Hull
Whilst not all the castles in Pembrokeshire owe their origins to the Normans - some being built by the Welsh in response to the Norman Conquest - it is with the Norman arrival in the area around 1093 that castle building commences.
It was then that Arnulf de Montgomery founded Pembroke Castle as the centre of his 'castellarium" which later grew into the seat of the earldom of Pembroke.
Welsh resistance pinned the Normans back for the next few years, but in the 11OOs what became Pembrokeshire saw a spate of castle building by the Normans - initially of earth and timber structures.
