Politics of Panama - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Panamanian history, the dominant parties have been the PRD and the Panameñista (former Arnulfista Party).
These parties were founded by very charismatic and strong political enemies, Omar Torrijos (PRD) - the father of the current president, Martin Torrijos Espino - and Arnulfo Arias (Panameñista/Arnulfista) - husband of the previous president, Mireya Moscoso -.
However, the country's socialist/worker parties are not popular as in Venezuela, Cuba and Bolivia.

Civic Renewal Party - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Civic Renewal Party (Partido Renovacion Civilista) was a political party in Panama, founded by a group of professionals who had played key roles in the Cruzada Civilista (Civic Crusade) that opposed General Manuel Antonio Noriega's military dictatorship during 1987-1989.
In 1994, it backed then-Comptroller General Ruben Dario Carles as part of the "Cambio '94" ("Change '94") coalition and in 1999, it supported banker and former Arnulfista Party member Alberto Vallarino Clement, as a part of the "Accion Opositora" ("Opposing Action") alliance.
Although the party elected three legislators to the unicameral Legislative Assembly in 1994, in the 1999 election it failed to garner enough votes to survive and, pursuant to Panamanian Electoral Laws, was dissolved thereafter.

The traditional political parties were the Liberals and the Conservatives, and their differences lay initially in the issue of church and state power.
More recently, parties tended to be coalitions of the many splinter groups that had formed around local leaders.
The coalition that came to power in 1990 consisted of President Endara's Arnulfista Party, led by Dr. Arnulfo Escalona, the National Liberal Republican Movement (MOLIRENA), led by second vice president Guillermo Ford; and the Christian Democratic Party (PDC), led by first vice president Ricardo Arias.

Panama Guide: The Re-birth of the Panameñista Party?
The Panameñista party recently underwent a complete re-vamp of their internal practices and policies, a reform effort that was spearheaded and pushed through by Marco Ameglio.
For example, the "Solidarity" party, which was lifted from relative obscurity by adopting Endara for the last election and the "Liberal" party, one of the oldest and most established parties in Panama, are working to join forces with the "Patriotic Union" party.
He quickly pointed out that the reforms he pushed through to modernize the Panameñista party were in direct response to political mistakes made by power-hungry controlling powers within the party in the past, and were an effort to revitalize the Panameñista party and to give them a fighting chance for the next election.

After 3-1/2 years in office, Panama's populist President Mireya Moscoso of the Arnulfista Party, who was voted in on a platform of poverty reduction, is seen as another Latin American leader who failed to live up to promises to help the destitute.
Many voters say the free-market PRD policies of privatizing state-owned companies in the 1990s, when the party was last in power, pushed up the cost of living in Panama and failed to improve the lot of the poor.
The populist Arnulfista Party, formed in the 1940s by former president Arnulfo Arias, is seen as lacking any clear ideology, and is perennially criticized for tailoring its policies for the benefit of Panama's oligarchy.
