Aroostook was formed in March, 1839, from parts of Penobscot and Washington counties, with Houlton for its shire town.

In the census of Aroostook County, the census takers were not consistent in taking down information about the occupations of individuals, about the number of students in each family, or about the number of people in each family who could not read and write.
